John D. Parish, Jr.

John D. Parish, Jr., of Sheridan, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 27, at home at the age of 72. He was born August 1, 1939 in Greenwood, Mississippi, the son of the late John D. Parish, Sr. And Emma Dennis Moore Parish. John was a graduate of Mississippi State University and a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. A lifelong Presbyterian, John was serving as an Elder at the Central Presbyterian Church in Pine Bluff.

Hazel Viola Greer Stroud

Hazel Viola Greer Stroud, 88, of Benton died Monday, Dec. 26, at Ridgewood Health Center.  She was born on April 16, 1923 in Bauxite, to the late George T. and Julia Greer.  Mrs. Stroud was a homemaker and a member of West Bauxite Missionary Baptist Church.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, B. L. Stroud, five brothers, and two sisters.
She is survived by one son, Jerry Greer and wife Janice of Traskwood; step-son Larry D. Stroud and wife Missy of Little Rock; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

No Pujols, no problem: Cardinals sign Beltran at bargain

This whole not having Albert Pujols retire with the St. Louis Cardinals thing keeps getting easier and easier. It was announced on Thursday that former Cardinal killer Carlos Beltran signed with St. Louis on Thursday with the signing being announced sometime after the holidays.

A free agent outfielder who most recently played for the San Francisco Giants after being traded from the New York Mets last year, Beltran hit a combined .300 for the two teams with 22 home runs and 84 RBIs in 142 games.

Man injured during Christmas Eve wreck on Benton Parkway

A Saline County man remains in a Little Rock hospital after a single vehicle accident on Saturday in Benton, according to authorities.
Lt. Kevin Russell of the Benton Police Department said around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, officers were dispatched to Benton Parkway for reports of a wreckless driver. When they arrived, the found a gold color GMC Sierra turned over in a field at Benton Parkway and Pleasant Popular. The driver, 23-year-old Alexander Walls had been ejected from the vehicle.

Fred Ann “Button” Jackson

Fred Ann “Button” Jackson, 63, of Traskwood, passed away Sunday, Dec. 25. She was born May 16, 1948 in Traskwood to the late Fred Dudley Jackson, and Minnie Jane Stuckey Jackson.  Button was a graduate of Glen Rose High School, and a retired nurse.  She was also a member of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, where she played the piano every Sunday.
She is preceded in death by parents, three sons, Kevin, Darren, and Paul McCutcheon; one sister, Mary Smart, and one nephew, Steve Weir. 

Dean Lampkin

Dean Lampkin, 75, of Benton, passed away Saturday, Dec. 24.  He was born October 9, 1936 in Danville.  Mr. Lampkin was in sales and a member of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Austin and Eula Lampkin; two brothers, Lavon “Von” Lampkin and T. C. Lampkin and a sister, Levoy Lampkin.

Servicemen reunited after 26 years apart

Not many servicemen or women have the distinction of serving in two branches of the armed services within a 48-hour period.
The late Jack Seabloom had such an opportunity.
One morning in 1946, Seabloom was called in for a special mission. His superiors dismissed him from the Army with an honorable discharge and, minutes later, inducted him into the U.S. Coast Guard.
"There was a ship that was just moving in circles. Apparently, the crew had fallen asleep. It had gotten turned around and almost collided. They wanted him to go wake (the crew) up, " said his wife, Michelle Seabloom.

Heart pump gives new life to Benton woman

LaDonna McCormack had hoped to have a new heart by Christmas.
She didn't get it, but she got the next best thing: a tiny heart pump that is literally saving her life every day.
The Heart Mate II LVAD, or left ventricle assist device, was implanted just beneath her heart a few months ago. Though McCormack's lifestyle has been modified as a result, she faces the future with optimism and gratitude for the additional years this modern medical miracle is giving her.

Busken remembered 15 years after death

In the early morning hours of Dec. 20, 1996, Oklahoma University ballerina Juli Busken disappeared from her apartment complex in east Norman.
A man she had never met made certain she would never return to her temporary home nor to her family home in Benton. Her body was found about 12 hours later on the shores of Lake Stanley Draper in Oklahoma City, where she had been bound, raped and shot to death.

Charles Nathan Garrett

Charles Nathan Garrett, age 82, of Springdale, passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2011.  He was born in Saline County, Arkansas on Feb. 15 in the year 1929. 
Nathan was the firstborn child of Charles Dewey and Alberta Johnson Garrett. 
 He loved hunting and fishing and was an instructor for hunter safety with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. 
After retiring from the Arkansas Highway Department in 1987, Nathan became active in “Campers on Mission” and Arkansas Disaster Relief.  He was a longtime member of Life Line Baptist Church in Little Rocks.
