Bro. James R. Walker, 91, of Benton, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 27.Â
He was born on July 12, 1920 in Ouachita, to the late George and Kate (Key) Walker.
Bro. Walker served as pastor at First Assembly of God in Benton for 16 years and later served as pastor at Otter Creek Assembly of God for 30 years. Â He was a WWII Army Veteran and loved to fish and hunt.Â
Eugene Southworth, 87, of Malvern, passed away Dec. 28.
He was born May 30, 1924Â in Paron to the late Dick and Norme Burnett Southworth.Â
Eugene was of the Assembly of God faith.Â
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Eleanor Southworth.Â
He is survived by his son, Richard Southworth of Malvern; daughters, Diann Galloway of Malvern, Kathy Norwood and Tina Benton both of Benton; step sons, Otis, Howard and Ray Nerghbors; and eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.Â

The Harmony Grove senior high girls basketball team got back to work on Tuesday when they traveled to Carlisle for the Carlisle Christmas Tournament. The Lady Cardinals got things under way against Maumelle, but the outcome was not very good as they fell 55-39 Tuesday morning.
âIt was a sloppy, early-morning game,â head Lady Cardinalsâ Coach John White said. âBoth teams finally settled in later on.â
The Bauxite Lady Miners came back from their week and a half break and lost 60-49 to the Magnet Cove Lady Panthers on Tuesday in the Jessieville Christmas Classic in Jessieville.
âWe didnât play really well,â Bauxite Coach Josh Harrison said. âMagnet Cove played with a lot of effort and intensity [Tuesday] and we didnât match theirs today.â
The Lady Miners (9-4) didnât have a problem scoring in the first quarter finishing with 19 points, but defensively, Bauxite couldnât stop Magnet Cove, allowing it to score 18 points in the opening quarter.

Almost $15,000 was raised for the Bryant Boys and Girls Club at the inaugural Starlight Gala, presented by Landers of Benton and organized by the Bryant Rotary Club.
âWe could not be more pleased with and grateful to our community for the overwhelming support at this event,â Suzanne Passmore, executive director of the Bryant Boys and Girls Club said. âLanders of Benton, Bryant Rotary and so many others went above and beyond to make this a successful event to benefit our kids.â
An alcohol tax, plans for Raymar Road South, and the approval of a patrol fleet plan for the Bryant Police Department will be among the numerous topics addressed late Thursday at the Bryant City Council meeting.
The 7 p.m. meeting will be held at the Boswell Community Complex, 210 S.W. Third St. in Bryant and it is open to the public.
Marissa Lynn Wright of Traskwood, who recently admitted to killing two men since 2008 and burying them in her backyard, is expected to complete a mental evaluation on Wednesday.
Wright, 50, is expected to be transported to a state hospital for the mental exam or license doctors could make the trip to Grant County jail where she is being held without bond.
Ashton Lee Hobbs, 6 of Benton, flew to heaven on Dec. 27, to be with Jesus. He was born August 13, 2005 to N. Pradhan and Felisity Light Powell. Ashton loved the mountains of Wyoming, loved to fly and playing with his puppy Dragon Lady. Ashton was also fond of Mary Ann Durham whom he referred to as Granny and Merlene Wegner as Mimi.Â
He is preceded in death by his grandmothers, Marian Hulsey of Benton and Dorothy Hobbs of Malvern and his older brother, Randy Hobbs of Hot Springs.
Melvin R. Burks, 82, of Benton, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 26. He was born on April 11, 1929, in Adamsville, Tennessee.
In 1947, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he achieved rank of Master Chief Petty Officer. In this role he was a forecaster at the U.S. Naval Weather Service unit, issuing weather briefings to all departing pilots.
