Paul E. Jones, 76, of Benton went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Dec. 5. 
He was born Aug. 18, 1936, in Ridge Top, Tenn., to the late John L. and Estelle Jones. Growing up in middle Tennessee, the family, including the children, grew and processed tobacco for the market.

Teresa Ann Garrett

Teresa Ann Garrett, 64, of Benton passed away Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Hospice Home Care in Little Rock after a long battle with cancer.
She was born May 26, 1948, in Benton. Teresa had been employed as an LPN for many years at Saline Memorial Hospital in Benton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Dean Garrett of Benton; her mother and stepfather, Ann and Wayne Talbert; and her father, James White.

Gary Bemberg

Gary Bemberg, 58, of Benton passed away Monday, Dec. 3. He was co-owner and vice-president in charge of plant operations at Bemberg Iron Works in Little Rock.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gordon Bemberg; and his son, Brad.,

Reba Darnell Kelley

Reba Darnell Kelley, 81, of Alexander passed away on Dec. 4, at her home. She was born Feb. 12, 1931, in Parker County, Texas.
Reba was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Lee Elders and Eva DeBusk Elders.

Man arrested for alleged burglary

December 8, 2012

A Benton man was arrested for allegedly breaking into a home in the city, authorities said.
Roderick Spears, 19, is facing charges of residential burglary and felony theft of property. As of press time, Spears is being held without bond in the Saline County jail, pending a bond hearing Monday in Benton District Court.
Officers of the Benton Police Department reportedly responded to a report of a home burglary in the 100 block of Windstone Drive on Nov. 30 and found that an estimated $1,300 worth of items had been stolen.

Lady Backs upset No. 17 Kansas at Walton Arena

FAYETTEVILLE - Unbeaten 17th-ranked Kansas is unbeaten no more and apt to fall  in next  week's women's basketball rankings.
Unranked Arkansas upset the Jayhawks, 64-56  in Thursday night's nonconference game before 1,356  at Walton Arena.
Arkansas overcame Kansas leads in both halves, surpassing the Jayhawks  33-24 at intermission but twice trailing KU by one in the second half before Jhasmin Bowen's layup put Arkansas up, 46-45 with 7:15 left and never trailing again.

Lady Hornets execute in win

CONWAY – After a tough loss in the first round of the John Stanton Wampus Cat Invitational, the Bryant Lady Hornets responded with a 49-39 win over the Alma Airedalettes in a consolation game on Thursday at Buzz Bolding Arena. Bryant lost to Camden Fairview 53-42 in the first round where the Lady Hornets lacked execution, both offensively and in the rebounding department (Bryant was out rebounded 18-7 in the second half).

CONWAY - After starting the season 5-0, the Benton Lady Panthers have dropped their last two contests, losing their last 43-27 to the West Memphis Lady Blue Devils on Thursday in a consolation game of the John Stanton Wampus Cat Invitational. Benton lost 57-36 to North Little Rock in the first round on Monday.
“We got outworked on the boards,” Benton Coach Jerry Chumley said. “We worked on that and made an emphasis the last two days, but for whatever reason we didn’t stick them. We did at times, but a team like that you have to do it every time or they’re going to eat you up.”

GLEN ROSE - Every football team, from high school to the pros, has the same goal in mind at the beginning of any season: make the playoffs and win a championship. Though Saline County is far from the NFL, there is one team in the area that has not strayed away from that preseason mindset.

Santa to visit number of spots throughout the county

Santa Claus will be visiting the Saline County Courthouse gazebo Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 6 p.m., until Christmas.
Santa Claus can also be seen at the Shannon Hills Christmas parade Saturday.
In addition, Salem United Methodist Church will host Breakfast with Santa on Saturday.
Another Breakfast with Santa is scheduled at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Saline County Moose Lodge.
Photo sessions with Santa and the Chick-fil-A cows will be available Tuesday, Dec. 11 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
