Bryant City Council budget workshop postponed

The Bryant City Council was scheduled to meet this evening to discuss the 2014 budget. This meeting has been postponed because the 2013 financial information is not completed yet, said Mayor Jill Dabbs.
In previous meetings and workshops, city council Aldermen have said that they would like to see complete 2013 financial information before they begin discussing the 2014 budget.
It's hard to anticipate 2014 without knowing where the city currently stands financially, said Finance Director Dennis Edwards.

Bauxite outplays Ashdown

BAUXITE - The Miner varsity girls of Bauxite, led by coach Joshua Harrison, took on the Panthers of Ashdown on Friday Dec. 20, in a highly contested matchup involving speedy hands and terrific posting. The Lady Miners took an early lead and never let up, out-hustling the Lady Panthers for the entire 32 minutes of play. The final was 45-36 Bauxite for the Lady Miners’ first 7-4A Conference victory.

Cathrine Johnson Marshall

Cathrine Johnson Marshall, 75 of Jacksonville, passed away Dec. 25, 2013.  She was born April 21, 1938 in Bauxite to the late Richard and Rosa Opal Kitchens Johnson.  Cathrine was retired from the Internal Revenue Service working there from 1982 till 2005. She was a Boy Scout Leader and was the recipient  of the honorary Silver Beaver Scout Award.  Cathrine was also an avid golfer, making a hole in one at the Internal Revenue Service Golf Tournament. She loved gardening and especially bird watching.
She was preceded in death by her parents and eldest son, Tilford W. Marshall II.

Bobby (Nobody) Lee Pagan

Bobby (Nobody) Lee Pagan, 81, of Arkadelphia passed from this life on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013 at his home.  He was born March 16, 1932, in Fendley, the son of the late George Ellis and Gussie Lucille Golden Pagan.  Bobby was retired from the National Guard, a United States Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict , and a Baptist.  He was an avid hunter, fisherman and enjoyed camping and operating Ham radios.  He was a welder by trade and taught truck driving to many young men and women.

Benton Police Department receive several shoplifting calls

Benton police officers had several shoplifting incidents reported on Monday and Tuesday.
Walmart, Jcpenney, Best Buy and RadioShack were all affected.
Two incidents were reported at Walmart. During one incident, an employee reported he witnessed a woman steal some merchandise. In a different incident, an employee reported a counterfeit $100 bill.

Orville Roberts

Orville Roberts, 93 of Benton, passed away Dec. 24, 2013.  He was born November 19, 1920 near Harrison, Arkansas to the late A.C. and Mettie Roberts.  He was happily married to the late Fae Dean Roberts for 65 years.  He graduated from Harrison High School, Ouachita Baptist University, and Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee.   He was proud to have served as a Marine Corps officer during World War II and The Korean Conflict and  was a member of First Baptist Church in Benton.

Clarence Haltom

Clarence Haltom, 85, of Gurdon, died Monday Dec. 23, 2013 at Twin Rivers Health and Rehab. Clarence was born Feb. 5, 1928 to Clarence Elba Haltom and Georgia Lou Malone in Okolona. Clarence was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Gurdon. He retired from Gurdon Lumber, International Paper Company and Cabe Land Company.
Clarence was preceded in death by his wife Martha of 50 years, two sisters, Jackie Stone and Joydell White.

Linda Sheridan

Linda Sheridan, 72, of Benton passed away Monday, Dec. 23, 2013 at her home.  She was born Sept. 17, 1941 in Benton to the late Alvin Walter and Maude Ball Raney. 
She was preceded in death by her first husband Fred G. “Buddy” Seamon, husband D. W. “Jabbo” Sheridan, and grandson Joshua Michael Seamon.
She is survived by Susan Fecteau of Illinois, Elaine and Darrell Joslin, Michael and Beth Seamon, Steve Seamon, and Debbie Cunningham, all of Benton and five wonderful grandchildren.

Travis Lee White

December 26, 2013

Travis Lee White, 65, of Benton, went home to be with God on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013.  He was born March 14, 1948 in Benton, to the late Elbert Leon and Lena Faye White. Travis loved fishing, family, friends, making people laugh and a clean vehicle.
Travis was preceded in death by his son, Tommy Lee White, niece, Chardon White and his parents.

Barbara Crook Gray

Barbara Crook Gray, 69, of Bauxite passed away at her home on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013.  She was born in Rison, on January 16, 1944. Barbara graduated from Rison High School and pursued her college education at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia.  She was a high school English teacher and spent most of her career at McClellan High School, where she also taught Mythology, until she retired in 2011.  She loved to read, especially mysteries, enjoyed gardening, and had an artistic flair.
