Miners swat Yellowjackets in final

CLINTON – The Bauxite Miners defeated host Clinton Yellowjackets 60-46 to win the First Service Bank Classic in Clinton on Monday night.
After a high-scoring first quarter in which the Miners (7-4) led 18-16, Bauxite would go on to lead 34-27 at the half before gaining closing it out on the Yellowjackets.
“This is actually our first full game where we grinded out the whole game and we just kept battling,” Bauxite Coach Andy Brakebill said. “We just pushed it on out and finished the game.”

Twice as nice

DONALDSON – After winning the Bill Gibbs Memorial Tournament at their home court earlier in the season, the Benton Harmony Grove Cardinals decided they wanted to win a tournament on the road. The Cardinals had little trouble in shutting the Fordyce Redbugs down with a 46-24 win in the Herb Russell Invitational championship game at Ouachita High School for their second consecutive tourney win.
“We won a championship in every tournament we’ve played in so that’s always good,” Cardinals Coach Dexter Hendrix said.

MOUNTAIN HOME – The Benton Panthers defeated the Fayetteville Bulldogs 50-48 in overtime in the 1st Arkansas Bail Bonds Tournament in Mountain Home on Saturday to claim their second consecutive tournament championship. The Panthers defeated Cabot to take the title in Cabot, and lost to Jacksonville 53-48 in the Searcy Classic Championship game to start the season.

Virginia Lee Callahan

Virginia Lee Callahan, 85, left her family on earth and joined her family in Heaven on Dec. 28, 2013.  She was born March 1, 1928.  Greeting her in heaven are her parents, Ethel Lee and Calvin George Settle, her husband, Dick Callahan, her fishing buddy Sara Cox, and her daughter Francis.
She left behind on earth her daughter, Cathy Jo Treat of Bryant; two sons, Richard Allen Zornes of Bryant and George Andrew Zornes of Siloam Springs; sister, Mary Margaret Chambers of Hot Springs, ten grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren .

Roy Corrnel Bryant

Roy Corrnel Bryant, 76 of Benton, formerly of Tampa, FL, passed away Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013. Roy was born March 2, 1937 in Georgia to the late William and Leona Bryant. Mr. Bryant retired from Tampa General Hospital. Since moving to Benton to live with his daughter, he attended church at Fellowship of the Cross and enjoyed going to the Benton Senior Adult Center.
He is also preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Bryant; sister, Eunice Martain Black; and brother, Willy Bryant.

John “Smoothie” Gosvenor

John “Smoothie” Gosvenor, 68, of Traskwood; passed away Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013 at his home.  He was born February 2, 1945 in Chidester. John was a truck driver for 48 years and was currently employed by Kenny Adams Trucking of Wynne.  He was of the Baptist faith and an avid fisherman.
John was preceded in death by his father, A.T. Gosvenor of Haskell; his mother, Thelma Gosvenor of Chidester and a brother, Charlie Gosvenor.

Wesley Ray Smith

Wesley Ray Smith, 67, of Benton, passed away Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013.  He was born August 14, 1946 in Benton.  Mr. Smith was a member of Social Hill Missionary Baptist Church and was a carpet layer. 
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, George A. Smith and Emer Ellen Smith, and Joseph Leonard Chism and Rosie Belle McGhee Chism; parents, Vernon C. and J. Berneice Smith; two brothers, Alvin Ellis Smith and Leonard Allen Smith.

Tammie Lynn Green

Tammie Lynn Green, age 54, of Bryant, passed away Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013.  She was born July 4, 1959 in St. Louis, Missouri.  Tammie was the North American Accounting Manager for Almatis, Inc. and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan. 

Jesse Ross “J.R.” Curtis

Jesse Ross “J.R.” Curtis, 70, of Hensley; passed away Friday, December 27, 2013.  He was born September 12, 1943 in Little Rock, Arkansas.  Mr. Curtis was a retired Produce Manager and an avid Razorback and Dodgers Fan. 
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Curtis and his mother, Clara Belle Cole.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Curtis; three sons, Tony, Brian and Mark Curtis; two daughters, Kim McNeil and Gwen Gaston; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services beginning at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30 at Ashby Funeral Home.
Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m.

Roberta Faye Mason

Roberta Faye Mason, 46, of Malvern died Monday, Dec. 23, 2013.  She was born October 10, 1967 in Sheridan to Marshall Lee and Alice Faye Darnell.  Mrs. Mason was a CNA at the Arkansas Health Center and Grant County Nursing Home.  Her mother and one son, David Ockerman preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Ockerman of Benton; father, Marshall Lee Darnell of Malvern; one sister, Catherine Picklesimer of Bauxite; one brother, Edgar Lee Darnell of Sheridan; one granddaughter, T’earra Ockerman, several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and friends.
