Parade tonight to kick off Saline County festivities

Preparations have been made for some time now and today it all comes to fruition with the official opening of the Saline County Fair.

The first event is the annual parade in Downtown Benton at 6 p.m. The theme is "Blue Jeans and Country Dreams." Winners will be announced for the top float entries and in some of the other divisions.

Activities will continue throughout the week, culminating with the final rodeo performance Saturday night in Thomas Arena at the fairgrounds.

County educators take part in ESL Academy

Public educators from across the state recently participated in the English as a Second Language graduate training program. Teachers were trained for 10 hours a day during the 13-day learning session and were required to complete a lengthy project in order to receive graduate hours from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia.

Murder suspect scheduled to appear in court Thursday

Abel Enriquez, who has been charged with first-degree murder, is scheduled for a bond hearing Thursday.

Enriquez, 65, of Sardis was arrested in June in connection with the death of his 22-year-old neighbor, Anthony Ballentine. Shortly after his arrest, his bond was set at $500,000.

He remains in custody at the Saline County Detention Center.

In August his attorney filed a motion requesting a reduction in bond.
