Ulyess B. Catlett

April 30, 2013

Ulyess B. Catlett, 90, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2013, in Jonesboro.
Ulyess was a long-time resident of Benton before moving to Jonesboro . He retired from the Benton Street Department in 1987.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 29, in Bud Davis Cemetery south of Booneville with the Rev. Tommy Henderson officiating. There will be no visitation.
Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro is in charge of arrangements.

Tracy Allen Whitlow

Tracy Allen Whitlow, 40, of Benton went to be with the Lord on April 18, 2013.
He enjoyed fishing, swimming and spending time with his family.
He left behind his fiancee, Christina Harvey; three beautiful girls, Lenae Harvey, Alyssa Kyle and Kaitlyn Kyle; and many friends who all loved him and will miss him dearly.  May God keep his soul and rest in peace.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Sunset Lake.
Arrangements are by Dial and Dudley Funeral Home.

Ethel Lee Langley

Ethel Lee Langley, age 80, of Little Rock passed away on April 24, 2013, in Little Rock.
She was born Feb. 11, 1933, in Taylor, Ark.
Ethel was owner of Ethel’s Snow Cone House in Benton and later in Little Rock and was a member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church in Little Rock.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Allie Emerson Kelly; and her husband, William L. Langley.
Survivors include a son, Russell Jones of Little Rock; two daughters, Lavada Jo Burks of Fort Smith and Twella E. Adams of Oklahoma; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Charles T. Steuart

Charles Thomas "Tommy" Steuart of Benton, formerly of Hot Springs, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2013. He was born Jan. 13, 1946, in Hot Springs to Luther and Christine Steuart.
Charles graduated from Hot Springs High School with the Class of 1963. He was the owner of CTS Rocks and Minerals in Hot Springs.
After serving with the Air Force in Vietnam, he graduated from Arkansas Tech, where he earned a degree in geology. He was employed as a geologist until his retirement in 2011.

Benton PD arrests wanted suspect after month-long search

April 29, 2013

A suspect who has been wanted by Benton police in connection with a string of burglaries was arrested Sunday after officers responded to an aggravated robbery and criminal mischief call.
Kenneth Hawkins, 42, had been on the run since April 13.
Hawkins also is a parolee from the Arkansas Department of Correction.

Libraries to host Teddy Bear Sleepovers

The Saline County Library will host a Teddy Bear Sleepover for children of all ages at 6 p.m. Tues., May 7 at Boswell Library in Bryant and 6 p.m. Thursday, May 16 at Herzfeld Library in Benton. Attendees are encouraged to bring a teddy bear or stuffed animal to the library and enjoy a special story time filled with stories, songs, snacks, games and prizes. Afterwards, children are encouraged to leave their stuffed animal at the library overnight.

Police searching for shooting suspect

April 26, 2013

The Benton Police Department is requesting help from the public in locating a shooting suspect.
A man was shot in the chest in the area of Millbrook Cove midnight Thursday, according to a release from the Benton Police Department.
The victim was transported from the scene via Medflight and is currently in serious condition, according to police.

NOTICE: Relay for Life moved to First Southern Baptist Church

April 24, 2013

Relay For Life of Saline County has been moved to the First Southern Baptist Church North Campus Gym, located at 8800 Arkansas 5, across from Midland Road.
The event was moved indoors because of weather forecasts calling for rain on Friday night.
Activities will begin at 6 p.m. Friday and conclude 6 a.m. Saturday.

Cardinals win streak at 6

HASKELL – After taking two games from Magnet Cove (9-5 and 6-5 wins) over the weekend, the Benton Harmony Grove Cardinals put their winning streak at six with a 14-2 shellacking of the Cutter Morning Star Eagles on Monday.
“I’m very proud of the leaps and bounds these guys have made this year,” Cardinals’ Coach Brandon Mynhier said. “They work hard and have really learned how to win.”
The Cardinals (10-8, 5-2 5-3A) pounded out 11 hits in the win and Ryan Roush started getting the win. Roush gave up two runs on five hits and two walks in five innings, and struck out six.
