Salem volunteer firefighters and Saline County Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene of crash on Scott Salem Road in Benton on Wednesday morning. According to Lt. Scott Courtney with the Saline County Sheriff's Office the wreck happened around 6:40 a.m.
A man, who's name has not been released, was driving a Pontiac Grand Prix when he left the roadway and crash viciously into a tree near the entrance of Long Hill housing division.
A television crew films students at Benton Middle School in Sept. 2013 as they build a vegetable garden behind their school. Former middle school teacher, Becky Comet, was a contestant on "The Biggest Loser" and returned to the school to help the students learn the importance of exercise and eating right. A segment during the popular TV show will focus on the school, the students and the garden they built will air tonight at 7 p.m.
Dennis Edwards, finance director for the city of Bryant, has resigned. In announcing Edwards' departure, Mayor Jill Dabbs said she had not been pleased with the finance department's operation until hiring Edwards and commended his efforts during his brief employment with the city.
Emergency personnel worked a rollover accident eastbound on Arkansas 5 near Hurricane Creek earlier today. The driver was not injured. The wreck was the second rollover accident in as many days.
After icy roads shutdown overpasses in Saline County this morning, a few have opened back up. The Military Road, Alcoa Road and Congo Road overpasses are now back open and accident free but still slick.
Traffic is now moving smoothly both ways at Exit 114 in Benton after a wreck stalled travels for about an hour this morning. Overpasses throughout county still extremely slick.
None of the schools in Saline County have plans to close early at this time, according to school officials.
Principal Tim Holicer at Harmony Grove said that "it is safer to keep the kids here while the temperature is below freezing."
More information will be reported as it becomes available.
Saline County emergency personnel are working multiple accidents with and without injuries due to slick roadways including every Interstate 30 overpass in the county, multiple wrecks on Arkansas 5 and Highway 67.
Parts of Arkansas 5 North near Miller Cove have been closed, along with the Military Road overpass at this time.
Temperatures have not reached freezing yet today but are expected to climb to 36 degrees. More winter weather is expected for tomorrow morning including freezing rain.
Entergy Arkansas officials have reported that about 450 customers are out of power in west Benton near West South Street.
"A vehicle has hit our equipment," according to their website. "Our crews are on their way to restore power as soon as possible."
First Electric Cooperative official have no reported outages at this time.
