DAVIS: Don't be a rubbernecker

HOLLENBECK: Is it a compliment or is the foot stuck in the mouth?

September 9, 2014

When is a compliment not a compliment? When it's padded with a partial insult.

Some people are notorious for this trait. They can't say something nice and just be done with it.

It's the old foot-in-the-mouth kind of thing, or what I call lefthanded praise. They don't necessarily intend to do this; it just happens.

You know the kind I mean. Like, "Hey, she doesn't look so bad for an old gal."

Or, "Why don't you try this dress? I'll bet it won't make you look so fat."
