Miners swat Yellowjackets in final

CLINTON – The Bauxite Miners defeated host Clinton Yellowjackets 60-46 to win the First Service Bank Classic in Clinton on Monday night.
After a high-scoring first quarter in which the Miners (7-4) led 18-16, Bauxite would go on to lead 34-27 at the half before gaining closing it out on the Yellowjackets.
“This is actually our first full game where we grinded out the whole game and we just kept battling,” Bauxite Coach Andy Brakebill said. “We just pushed it on out and finished the game.”

Twice as nice

DONALDSON – After winning the Bill Gibbs Memorial Tournament at their home court earlier in the season, the Benton Harmony Grove Cardinals decided they wanted to win a tournament on the road. The Cardinals had little trouble in shutting the Fordyce Redbugs down with a 46-24 win in the Herb Russell Invitational championship game at Ouachita High School for their second consecutive tourney win.
“We won a championship in every tournament we’ve played in so that’s always good,” Cardinals Coach Dexter Hendrix said.

MOUNTAIN HOME – The Benton Panthers defeated the Fayetteville Bulldogs 50-48 in overtime in the 1st Arkansas Bail Bonds Tournament in Mountain Home on Saturday to claim their second consecutive tournament championship. The Panthers defeated Cabot to take the title in Cabot, and lost to Jacksonville 53-48 in the Searcy Classic Championship game to start the season.

Bauxite outplays Ashdown

BAUXITE - The Miner varsity girls of Bauxite, led by coach Joshua Harrison, took on the Panthers of Ashdown on Friday Dec. 20, in a highly contested matchup involving speedy hands and terrific posting. The Lady Miners took an early lead and never let up, out-hustling the Lady Panthers for the entire 32 minutes of play. The final was 45-36 Bauxite for the Lady Miners’ first 7-4A Conference victory.

Davis drives Benton after slow start

BENTON – For the second consecutive game, the Benton Lady Panthers failed to score a point in a quarter, but unlike their 44-42 loss to Searcy on Thursday where they were outscored 13-0 in the third quarter, the Lady Panthers shook off a scoreless first quarter against the Springdale Lady Bulldogs on Friday in a 38-35 victory in their first home game of the year at Benton Arena.

Bryant dominates at meet

BRYANT – The Bryant swim team dominated once again as the Lady Hornets scored 530 points and Hornets 382 points to demolish the competition on Thursday at the Bishop Park Natatorium in Bryant. The Bryant girls defeated second-place Pulaski Academy (236) by almost 300 points, while the boys topped Magnolia (306) by 76. The Benton boys (251) took fourth, while the Lady Panthers (163) took fifth.

Lady Cards make it 2 straight

HASKELL -- After losing its first two games of the season, Harmony Grove (2-2) has made statements out of its last two opponents, winning by a combined 112-35. The Lady Cardinals put a hurt on the Woodlawn Lady Bears to open the Bill Gibbs Memorial Tournament on Tuesday, winning 55-26.
“I thought we had really good effort in the second half,” Head Coach John White said. “The shot selection was better and the effort in general helped us pull away with a big third quarter.”
Though the score was heavily weighted in Harmony Grove’s favor, the first half was a much closer game.

Tenacious Tackett leads Lady Miners

HASKELL – Senior Allison Tackett and junior Holly Willmon scored 22 points each in a 51-39 Bauxite Lady Miner victory over the Poyen Lady Indians in the Bill Gibbs Memorial Tournament on Tuesday in Daniel Henley Fieldhouse.
Behind her 22 points, Tackett pulled down 13 rebounds, dished out four assists, many to the 6-2 Willmon down low, adding a steal and block to her resume.

Panthers fall in 3 OTs

SEARCY – The Benton Panthers started the 2013-14 basketball season with a bit of sloppiness. After senior forward Josh Bowling hit a 3-pointer from the corner to put the Panthers up 40-38 with 47 seconds left in regulation, the Greenbrier Panthers would tie it with a second remaining in the game to force overtime, and would go on to win 57-54 in three OTs in the first round of the Searcy Classic on Thursday.

BENTON – After an undefeated 7A/6A South Conference season last year and a semifinals loss to the Jonesboro Golden Hurricane in the 6A State Tournament, the Benton Panthers have a lot to live up to after breaking the school record with 27 victories against just three losses last year.
But, not only have the Panthers lost five seniors which contributed heavily to the South champions, but Benton has a new coach in the interim after former Head Coach Chris Nail took the assistant principal's position.
