HASKELL -- After losing its first two games of the season, Harmony Grove (2-2) has made statements out of its last two opponents, winning by a combined 112-35. The Lady Cardinals put a hurt on the Woodlawn Lady Bears to open the Bill Gibbs Memorial Tournament on Tuesday, winning 55-26.
“I thought we had really good effort in the second half,” Head Coach John White said. “The shot selection was better and the effort in general helped us pull away with a big third quarter.”
Though the score was heavily weighted in Harmony Grove’s favor, the first half was a much closer game.
HASKELL – Senior Allison Tackett and junior Holly Willmon scored 22 points each in a 51-39 Bauxite Lady Miner victory over the Poyen Lady Indians in the Bill Gibbs Memorial Tournament on Tuesday in Daniel Henley Fieldhouse.
Behind her 22 points, Tackett pulled down 13 rebounds, dished out four assists, many to the 6-2 Willmon down low, adding a steal and block to her resume.
SEARCY – The Benton Panthers started the 2013-14 basketball season with a bit of sloppiness. After senior forward Josh Bowling hit a 3-pointer from the corner to put the Panthers up 40-38 with 47 seconds left in regulation, the Greenbrier Panthers would tie it with a second remaining in the game to force overtime, and would go on to win 57-54 in three OTs in the first round of the Searcy Classic on Thursday.
BENTON – After an undefeated 7A/6A South Conference season last year and a semifinals loss to the Jonesboro Golden Hurricane in the 6A State Tournament, the Benton Panthers have a lot to live up to after breaking the school record with 27 victories against just three losses last year.
But, not only have the Panthers lost five seniors which contributed heavily to the South champions, but Benton has a new coach in the interim after former Head Coach Chris Nail took the assistant principal's position.
