Sport Shop falls to Cabot

BENTON – Benton Sport Shop couldn’t overcome a slow start while allowing 15 hits in a 12-4 loss to the Sylvan Hills Bruins on Bill Perry Field at Bernard Holland Park in Benton on Tuesday.
“Sylvan Hills is a great team,” Benton Coach Steven Tew said. “They hit the ball very well against us. The good thing is none of us gave up. We rallied back there in the end and that was promising. We got a couple of guys banged up… we’ll be ready by district tournament.”

New Ink: Panther earns big opportunity

BENTON – Former Benton Panther first baseman Trey Bishop signed a letter of intent to play for the Arkansas Tech (Russellville) Wonder Boys on Monday afternoon at Benton Arena. Bishop was an All-Conference selection for the 22-5 Panthers, which fell in the semifinals of the 6A State Tournament.

Catchers, managers and Gold Gloves

Thirteen of the 30 Major League Baseball managers have been catchers in their minor or major league playing careers. Yes, 43 percent of today’s managers are former catchers, with six managers being former outfielders, and five managers who were shortstops in their playing days. I’ve always had an idea of the reasoning of why so many catchers become managers, but former Arkansas Razorback and St. Louis Cardinal three-time winning Gold Glove catcher Tom Pagnozzi simplified it for me.
“Because they’re the smartest baseball players, that’s why,” Pagnozzi joked.
