CONWAY – The Benton Lady Panthers came out of the gates hot, but fell 3-1 to the Conway Lady Wampus Cats in Conway on Thursday night. Benton took the first set 25-18 before Conway returned the favor in the second set with a 25-18 win of its own, and won the last two sets 25-19 and 25-16.
“They’re very competitive,” Benton Coach Brandy Chumley said of Conway. “It was a good team to play to see where our weaknesses are and what we need to work on to try to get us ready for our conference play. They’re a very good team.”
BENTON – It wasn’t the crispest of scrimmages, but that’s what scrimmages are for. The Benton Panthers topped the Mills Comets 30-21 in an Arkansas Activities Association benefit game on Tuesday night at Panther Stadium preceding next week’s opening-season game vs. Arkadelphia on Sept. 6.
BRYANT - The Bryant Hornets ended their 2012 season in disappointing fashion, falling to Cabot at home in the first round of the 7A state playoffs, 28-21. On Tuesday, the Hornets got back to work against someone other than themselves, battling the 7A State Champion Fayetteville and Pulaski Academy in benefit games.
With two 12-minute quarters against each, the Hornets worked on key issues and battled two good teams in doing so. First up was the Fayetteville Bulldogs. Coming off of a 2012 state title, the Bulldogs made the long trek to face Bryant and took advantage, outscoring Bryant 17-7.
BENTON – Losing six seniors from a state playoff team may seem like a lot to lose going into the next season, but the Benton Lady Panthers volleyball team is not shy on experience.
“We have five seniors this year and they all pretty much played last year, or played some,” Benton Coach Brandy Chumley said. “They know what it takes, and I have a feeling they’re going to do what it takes to have a good year. It’s been fun so far.”
