Panthers win in extras

BENTON – It took extra innings to do it, but the Benton Panthers came away with a 3-2 victory over the defending 5A state champion Arkadelphia Badgers on Friday at Panthers Field. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 2-2 game, Benton junior Cameron Spivey’s hard-hit grounder to second base scored courtesy runner Sam Baker when the throw to the catcher was low and the umpire called a trap against the ground for the winning run.

Hogs salvage series

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After losing 2-1 and 1-0 heartbreakers Friday and Saturday to the Florida Gators, Arkansas flogged Florida 9-3 Sunday in the final game of the SEC season-opening series at Florida's McKethan Stadium.
The Razorbacks take 9-7 overall and 1-2 in the SEC records back to Baum Stadium for 6:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. nonconference games Tuesday and Wednesday against Grambling State before hosting Alabama in next weekend's three-game SEC series.
Florida finished the series 13-7 overall and 2-1 in the SEC.

Car hits side wall of the Rib Crib in Benton; Driver injured

Rescue personnel work to stabilize the driver of a Ford Focus after a collision at the Rib Crib in Benton. The accident occurred at approximately 9:45 a.m. this morning. Witnesses say the driver had passed through the intersection of Military Road and Landers Road and was slumped over the steering wheel. The car proceeded across the parking lot at Bank of the Ozarks, hitting the side of the Rib Crib building. The driver was placed in a neck brace and taken to Saline Memorial Hospital. The identity of the driver has not been released.

Lucille Rundel

Lucille Rundel, 78, of Benton passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014, in Bryant. She was born Nov. 20, 1935, in Perry to the late Homer C. and Alma (Davis) Thomas.
Ms. Rundel was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack E. Rundel; one daughter, Debra Rundel; one son, Edward Rundel; one great-grandson, Jackson Stapleton; and one brother, Clarence Thomas.

Gayle 'MaMa Gayle' Bailey

Gayle “MaMa Gayle” Bailey, 76, of Benton passed away March 15, 2014.
She was born April 16, 1937, in Bauxite.
Gayle was a retired administrator at Serenity Park in Little Rock and a member of Discover the Joy Baptist Church.
Gayle enjoyed fishing, camping, reading and playing with her two dogs, Max and Ally.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Vassie Green Shepherd.

Robert R. Barker Sr.

Robert R. Barker Sr., 96, of Little Rock and recently of Hot Springs, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 14, 2014,in Hot Springs. He was born in Durant, Okla., on Dec. 16, 1917, to the late Robert O. and Pearl Spencer Barker.
He enjoyed his large family and leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Rudene; a son, Robert R. Barker Jr. (Bonnie) of Little Rock; daughters, Constance Manzer of Hot Springs Village and Joan Walker (Karl) of Benton; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many friends and family members.

Gladys C. Chambliss

Gladys C. Chambliss, age 90, of Benton passed away Friday, March 14, 2014. 
She was born March 3, 1924, in Casa, Ark.
Mrs. Chambliss was a homemaker and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilburn F. and Mittie Cody; her husband, Robert Chambliss; and a granddaughter, Allison Chambliss.

Robert John Donoher

Robert John Donoher entered the Lord’s presence on Monday, March 10, 2014. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, on June 9, 1925. Bob was a WWII veteran who proudly served his country. On October 11, 1979, he married Rose Eriksen, becoming a caring father to six children, ranging from ages 14-22. Bob was a loving and loyal husband of 34 years. He will always be loved and remembered as the best father and grandfather. He retired as a railroad police sergeant for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad System in Oregon, Ohio. Bob loved sharing stories about his 37 years as a railroad officer.

Maxine Mildred Martin

Maxine Mildred Martin, 88, of Benton, passed away March 13, 2014.  She was born Sept. 19, 1925, in Traskwood, to the late Lee Roy and Eunice Crooks Callahan. 
Maxine was of the Baptist faith. She worked for Arkansas State Hospital for over 24 years, 15 of which she worked as an L.P.T.N.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Leroy and John Callahan; and a sister, Juanita Callahan.
