Lucille Baker Hannon

November 20, 2012

Lucille Baker Hannon, 92, of Benton passed Monday, Nov. 12. She was born in Cotton Plant to the late Oliver B. Baker and Henrietta (White) Hunt.
She is survived by her son, John Hannon Sr.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at Longley Baptist Church in Little Rock with the Rev. Billy R. Brewster officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Benton by Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff.
The body will lie in state at the church from 10:15 a.m. until time of the service.

Panther tourney team dominates

A Benton Panther tournament team made up of all sixth graders had an impressive run in a tournament at Lake Hamilton High school on Saturday, Nov. 10. From the Future Panthers program, the team of 20 total kids ran through the tournament, playing three games in one day, without surrendering a point.
The Benton sixth graders took down Hot Springs in the morning game 52-0, blew out Sheridan 40-0 in the afternoon game, and shut out Star City in the championship game 20-0 to take the first-place trophy.

Saline Ministerial Alliance holds open Thanksgiving service at Butler Auditorium

People of many faiths came together Sunday night to worship and express gratitude in the annual Thanksgiving service sponsored by the Saline County Ministerial Alliance.
The setting was Butler Auditorium on the Benton High School campus.
An offering taken at the service raised $1,390.69 to be given to the Churches Joint Council on Human Needs.
Saline County Chaplain Tamra Gore, representing CJCOHN, explained that the number of area residents needing help from the agency has risen this year.

Controversy arises over dogs attack on woman

A Saline County woman remains hospitalized with serious injuries after being attacked by multiple dogs, authorities said.
The same dogs allegedly attacked a 13-year-old girl just days before, yet the dogs are allowed to remain at the owners' home due to the lack of a county animal control program.

Helen May Jordan Lovell

November 16, 2012

Helen May Jordan Lovell, 82 of Benton went home to be with her Lord on Nov. 15. She was born May 13, 1930, in Garrett, Ind.
She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and playing bingo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Blanche Ransom; her husbands, Calvin Jordan and James Lovell; and her sisters, Joanne Sickman and Jean LaRowe.

Lola L. Gray

November 15, 2012

Lola L. Gray, 87, of Fayetteville died Tuesday, Nov. 13, in Fayetteville. She was born Dec. 4, 1924, in Newark, the daughter of Henry R. Lane and Maudie Henderson Lane.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Gray.
She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Mahady of Fayetteville and Jeannie Villines of Benton; a brother, John W. Lane of Little Rock; a sister, Katherine Reynolds of Little Rock; four grandchildren, Chris Villines, Kevin Villines, Chance Villines and Andrea Price; and six great-grandchildren.
The family plans to hold a memorial service at a later date.

Elzie Jean (Brewer) Mashburn

Elzie Jean (Brewer) Mashburn, 83, a resident of the Sardis Community in saline County, went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her family on Monday, Nov. 12.  She was born March 4, 1929, to the late Sidney and Brunie Mae (Lemons) Brewer in Little Rock.
She was a member of Landmark United Pentecostal Church and an associate member of the Arkansas-Mississippi Chapter of the Second Marine Division Association.
She was always there for her family, friends, and her church.  She loved to quilt, do needlework, sew, garden and worship her savior. 

Richard “Walter” Stafford

Richard “Walter” Stafford, 68, of Sherwood passed away Nov. 11, in Sherwood. He was born Feb. 20, 1944, the ninth of ten children of the late James and Verda Stafford.
Rich served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and earned numerous honors. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and became a lifelong Razorback fan.

Elizabeth Elaine Billips and Jack Samuel Stegall

Elizabeth Elaine Billips and her infant son, Jack Samuel Stegall, died together Nov. 7 at her home in Bryant.
Billips was born to Paul and Elaine Billips on Oct. 23, 1985, and was raised in White Hall, where she graduated high school in 2004. She was a true lover of life and those around her. Family members said she enjoyed singing, golfing, and baking for her family and friends. With a smile that could light up a room, she left an everlasting mark on each heart that she touched.

Susan Rene Parish

Susan Rene Parish, 34, of Benton passed away Wednesday, Nov.r 7. She was born Jan. 15, 1978, in Little Rock.
She was self-employed and a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Benton.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Charles Michael Smithers; and her grandparents, Clomer and Betty Smithers and Jackie and Emma Smith.
