Charles E. (Buddy) Smithson, 89, of Benton departed this life into eternal bliss on Friday, Oct. 17, 2014. He was born July 29, 1925 in Malvern to Jasper and Georgia Smithson. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Buddy loved his family and enjoyed countless hours eating and hanging out with them.
G. W. Tyler, 75, of Alexander, passed away Oct. 16, 2014. He was born Jan. 24, 1939 in Carbon Hill, Ala.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley Tyler and Lola Tyler; brother, Gene Tyler, and the mother of his children, Mary I. Tyler.
On Oct. 7, Brad Moore announced he would be moving to Northwest Arkansas and subsequently would be dropping out of his race for re-election as alderman for Ward 4, Position 1. Following the announcement, it was assumed that his opponent, Jim Gardner, would take Moore's seat on the city council. Due to filing deadlines and election guidelines, Moore will remain on the ballot and his votes will count.
Moore continues to prepare for his move to Northwest Arkansas and has attempted to clear up the ballot issue.
Rep. Tim Griffin is on the campaign for the office of Lt. Governor in Arkansas. Griffin, a Republican, is leaving his seat in the U.S. Congress where he has represented the 2nd district since 2011. On Oct. 13, he stopped by the Saline Courier for an interview with Editor Brent Davis. Griffin is facing former State Highway Commissioner John Burkhalter, a Democrat, and Chris Olsen, a Libertarian. Griffin answered questions related to the office of Lt. Governor, its importance and what his focus would be if elected.
