Child hurt after fall into LR Zoo's jaguar exhibit

LITTLE ROCK — Little Rock Zoo officials say a young child is recovering after falling into a jaguar exhibit.

Zoo spokeswoman Susan Altrui says staff members used a fire extinguisher to keep the jaguars from approaching the toddler after the incident Friday morning. The child was pulled to safety by a zoo employee who'd lowered a ladder into the exhibit.

Altrui says the child was conscious and responding at the time and was taken to a nearby hospital. Officials have not yet released the child's age or said how the toddler fell into the exhibit.

A-F rating system approved for Arkansas schools

LITTLE ROCK — Most Arkansas public schools will soon be graded in much the same way students are graded.

On Thursday, the Arkansas Board of Education approved a new A through F rating system that will replace the older practice of rating schools on a 1-5 scale. Schools won't be penalized or rewarded based on their results. Grades won't be applied to alternative learning education centers.

The media reports a 2013 law required the letter grades, which are meant to be easier for parents to understand.

Barbershop, gospel music on tap at concert to benefit Safe Haven

Some tickets are still available for a Saturday night benefit concert for Safe Haven, a local domestic abuse shelter for women and children.

Two performing groups will be featured in the 6 p.m. concert at the Christian Life Center of First United Methodist Church. Doors will open at 5 p.m.

The event will feature Top of the Rock women's barbershop singers, based in Little Rock, and Mark209, a gospel quartet from Nashville, Tenn.
