The Russellville Cyclones defeated the Bryant Hornets’ golf team 157 to 160 on Thursday at Hurricane Creek Country Club. The Bryant junior varsity team shot a 173 for third place.
Junior Austin Harmon shot a match-best 3-under-par 33, but the rest of the Hornets didn’t give much help as the Cyclones took victory.
“Yesterday was a very bad match for us,” Bryant coach Keith Dale said. “Austin Harmon shot very well, but the rest of the team didn’t play very well.”
Harmon finished with five birdies, two bogeys and also had two pars.
The Bryant Hornets’ tennis team defeated the Pine Bluff Zebras on Thursday in Pine Bluff. The Lady Hornets swept its single’s matches 2-0 and split its double’s matches 1-1. The Hornets’ boys swept its singles matches 2-0, but were swept 0-2 in its doubles matches.
Bryant Hornets coach Steve Wilson said senior Callie Hogancamp and sophomore Whitney Butler both played well for their second victories of the year.
Hogancamp defeated Toreia Harris 8-1 in Girls 1 singles and Butler beat Brittney Sargent 8-0 in Girls 2 singles.

It is Christmas morning for the two biggest schools of Saline County as the Salt Bowl game between Benton and Bryant has finally arrived. All the hype and smack talk has led up to one of the biggest football rivalry games in the state as nearly 30,000 fans are expected to show up tonight at War Memorial Stadium.
For the Benton Panthers, the key for tonight against the Hornets will be their defense. In year’s past, Benton has had a fairly efficient defense but it has been their struggling offense that has put the defense in bad field positions.
The Bryant Lady Hornets’ volleyball team defeated the Little Rock Central Lady Tigers in both teams’ first 7A Central conference match of the year. The Lady Hornets took the first two games of the match easily 25-13 and 25-14, before dropping the third set 25-23.
The Lady Tigers gave them some problems in the fourth, but the Lady Hornets pulled away and won 25-20.
“I’m happy we won,” Bryant coach Beth Solomon said. “It was a good win for our first conference game. Now we’re 1-0 and in conference. That’s a positive thing.
Gilbert Rodriguez, 69, passed away peacefully at his home in Mablevale, Aug. 28. Â
He was preceded in death by his parents; Trinidad and Adela Rodriguez; one daughter; Cynthia Byford and one sister; Gloria Salinas.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 31 years, Glenda; five children; Gilbert Jr., Robert, Harvey, Johnny and Gloria Rodriguez; two step-children; Charles Tyson and Glenda Glass; eighteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Four brothers; Joe, Hector, Trinidad and Dale Rodriguez; three sisters Eva Ybarra, Alice Tamez and Diane Lopez, all of South Texas.
Chief Master Sgt. Donald E. "Sam" Hodshire (Ret. USAF), 81, of Venus, Texas, passed away August 24, while surrounded by his loving family at his Venus home. Sam was born November 24, 1929 in Granite City, IL to Jackson and Alma Grace Hodshire. He served his country proudly in the United States Air Force and retired in 1969 having achieved the highest rank of the enlisted, Chief Master Sergeant. On December 5, 1953 Sam married Etta Watson in Dundee, Scotland. He had a unique sense of humor and easily made friends wherever he went. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and gardening.
Doris Elaine Irwin, 68, of Benton, passed from this life on Aug 27. She was born in Cherokee, Oklahoma on October 25, 1942 to her parents Howard and Irene Main.

Doris loved music and teaching piano and truly enjoyed having people in her home. She also counseled young couples as part of her church ministry.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Robert Irwin.

Barbara Ann (Kiser) McGinley, 87, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, formerly of Benton, died August 29, in Hendersonville. She was born August 6, 1924 in Keokuk, Iowa. Barbara was a retired Registered Nurse. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold Calvin Kiser and Lillian Wright Kiser; husband, Harold W. McGinley; and son, John Michael McGinley.

Elizabeth (Bettye) Poindexter Smithers, 86, longtime Benton resident, passed away on Monday, August 29, after a courageous battle with Lung Disease. Bettye was born on August 21, 1925 in Magazine, to the late Edward Judson and Blanche Ellington Poindexter, moving to Booneville during her adolescent years. She graduated from Ouachita Baptist University, where she was voted College Beauty, member of W.C.F.
