ADC announces date for annual horse auction

The Arkansas Department of Correction Agriculture Division will host its annual horse auction on Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Saline County Fairgrounds in Benton.

The public will have the opportunity to bid on 25-30 retired horses, colts and mules from ADC's working herd.

Those interested in bidding on the animals may view and ride them from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 3 at the fairgrounds. 

On the day of the sale, the horses may be viewed from 8 a.m. until noon and the sale will then begin at 1 p.m.

Authorities arrest suspected vandal linked to shooting

An 18-year-old Benton resident who allegedly shot at Benton High School on two separate occasions was arrested Thursday afternoon by Benton police.

During two incidents, Justin Carroll, 18, of Benton allegedly drove by Benton High School late at night and shot at the school multiple times, said Lt. Kevin Russell,police department spokesperson.

During the first incident, the glass of the rotunda was shot and during the second incident the digital billboard and a glass door of the cafeteria were damaged, he said.

Benton PD kicks off city's academy; application deadline is Sept. 19

The Benton Police Department is accepting applications for the upcoming 12th annual Citizens Police Academy.

The academy will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 23, and will include nine classes during an eight-week period.
The course is "designed to give participants a better understanding of police functions and responsibilities," said Lt. Kevin Russell, public information officer.

Topics will include criminal investigations, patrol functions, narcotics investigations, school resource officers, crime prevention, traffic stops, K-9 programs and shooting instruction.

Council to discuss hike in water, sewage rates

The Bauxite City Council is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, to discuss potentially raising the water and sewer rates as well as amending late charge rates for services.

The potential increase recommendation was prepared by Alderman Paula Matthews.

Currently, residential customers are charged $17 for the first 2,000 gallons of water and $8.50 per 1,000 gallons thereafter. Customers the sewer charges are $12 for the first 2,000 gallons and $5.15 per 1,000 gallons thereafter.
