Ula Jean (Turner) Griffin

April 6, 2012

Ula Jean (Turner) Griffin, 73, of the Shaw Community, passed away Wednesday, April 4, at Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock.  She was born April 20, 1938 in England to the late T.J. and Verda Ann Turner.  She was a homemaker and loved to hunt and raise chickens.  She was of Missionary Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Walter Wayne Griffin; two grandsons, Chris Lewis and Walter Ammons; two sisters, Irma Gregg and Vetola Stergeon, and four brothers. 

Randy Michael Wootten

April 6, 2012

Randy Michael Wootten, 46, of Batesville entered heaven after a courageous battle with lung cancer, quietly with family at his home, on Monday, April 2. He was born August 29, 1966 in Torrance, Calif. to Jerry and Wanda Wooten.
He is proceeded in death by his father, Jerry C. Wootten on Benton.

Morgan L. Hodkin

Morgan L. Hodkin, 91, of Benton went home to be with the Lord on April 4. He was born Oct. 13, 1920 to the late Bill and Grace Hodkin of Carthage, Mo. Mr. Hodkin was a deacon for more than 60 years a member of Holland Chapel Church. Morgan was the mechanical engineer director of the physical plant at UAMS for 26 years.
After he retired from UAMS in 1975, he was the field director with Carter, Chilcoat Icobaum Rouse and Walker. 

Mary McRee Mitchell

Mary McRee Mitchell, 67, of Alexander, passed away Monday, April 2.  She was born May 9, 1944 in Little Rock.  Mrs. Mitchell was a retired L.P.N. and a strong advocate for helping local nursing homes.  She was a passionate Arkansas Razorback fan. 
Mrs. Mitchell was preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Helene Blakley and her husband, Phillip Charles Mitchell.

Pitcher throws 5th no-no

BRYANT – Bryant senior starting pitcher Peyton Jenkins pitched her fifth no-hitter of the season and went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a triple to lead the Lady Hornets to a 6-0 victory over the Russellville Lady Cyclones on Tuesday in 7A Central conference action in Bryant. Jenkins’ fantastic game was complemented by senior center fielder Kayla Sory’s 2 for 4 day with two home runs and four RBIs.

Bryant takes team championship

CABOT – Behind a 45-point performance from junior Alexis Royal and 23 points from sophomore Leah Ward, the Bryant Lady Hornets took the team championship at the Walmart Invitational track meet Tuesday night in Cabot.  Bryant scored 155 points with Cabot taking runner-up with 107 points.  Conway was third with 105 points.  There were 11 teams at the meet.

Town Hall meeting in Benton on Thursday

A town hall meeting will be held on Thursday by the Benton Police Department to present a life saving service called Smart911.
"There is a vast amount of opportunity for our 911 service. Smart911 could provide faster, safer public safety response that could save lives," Police Chief Kirk Lane said. "We want to first educate the public about the program. Then we want people to give feedback and input on if we should pursue this or not."

Bryant wins without rest

SHERWOOD – The Bryant Lady Hornets have been busy. After routing Van Buren 17-0 in 7A Central conference play on Thursday, the Lady Hornets played six games in two days in the Van Buren Invitational, winning it to remain undefeated on the year. With an off day on Sunday, Bryant suited back up and traveled to Sylvan Hills to face the Lady Bears in non-conference action and came away with a 7-2 victory.

Benton tosses perfect game, moves streak to 12

The Benton Lady Panthers made short work of JA Fair on Tuesday as they extended their winning streak to 12 with a 15-0 rout. Both coaches agreed to put in a five-run limit per inning rule before the game started.

Benton scored five straight runs on four walks, two hits and an error in the first to take the early 5-0 lead.

Jessica Franklin shut down Fair in the bottom of the first by striking out the side, but was injured on the play. Immediately after releasing a strike three fastball to the third-place hitter to end the inning, Franklin hit the ground in pain as she grabbed her knee.

Bauxite routs Pulaski Academy

BAUXITE – The Bauxite Lady Miners’ last two games have been ones of extremes. On Friday, the Lady Miners lost 12-1 to the Nashville Lady Scrappers in 7-4A conference action, and on Monday, Bauxite routed the Pulaski Academy Lady Bruins 17-0 to win its first conference game of the year.

Though the Lady Miners (3-5, 1-2 7-4A) lost big to Nashville, Bauxite Coach Wes Mode was more pleased with how his team played against the Lady Scrappers than in the 17-0 shellacking of the Lady Bruins.
