Bryant hires new city attorney

Richard "Chris" Madison, licensed in all courts of Arkansas, the U.S. District Courts for Eastern and Western Districts of Arkansas, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court, is now Bryant's staff attorney.
Born and raised in south Pulaski County, Madison graduated from Mills High School and attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science.

Loss of Entergy transimission line causes local power outage

A widespread electrical power outage on Sunday night in Benton was quickly corrected, according to Terry McKinney, general manager of Benton Utilities.
McKinney said the area affected involved "approximately one-third of the city."
The incident occurred about 9 p.m. when Benton Utilities "lost the Benton North Substation and the outage extended pretty much to everything north of the interstate, which included Walmart and a few other stores on the south side."
McKinney noted that Saline Memorial Hospital was not affected by the outage.

Two innings seal Lady Miners' fate

It was a rough couple of innings for the Bauxite Lady Miners softball team as they gave up six runs apiece in the second and third innings in their 12-1 loss to the Magnent Cove Lady Panthers on Tuesday in Bauxite. Senior Bauxite pitcher Bethany Edwards retired the side in order on four pitches in the first inning, but errors and mental lapses by the Lady Miners led to 34 pitches each in the next two innings.

Benton needs extra innings

BENTON – The Benton Lady Panthers softball team continued their dominance on Tuesday when they welcomed the Nashville Lady Scrappers into Lady Panther Park. The Lady Panthers beat Nashville 7-0 in the Bootsie Gordon Tournament on Saturday, on their way to winning the tournament.

Tuesday was a much harder contest for Benton, but the Lady Panthers did prevail at the end winning 2-1 in the eighth inning.

Starting pitcher Lauren White allowed a hit to Nashville in the first, but was able to escape unscathed after forcing a ground out and getting a strikeout to end the inning.

Renovations completed at CJCOHN food barn

Churches Joint Council on Human Needs volunteers focus year-round on helping alleviate hunger in the local area.
As part of the agency's mission, area groups and individuals conduct food drives and fundraising projects throughout the year to help meet this ever-growing need, volunteers say.
There are times, however, when the charitable agencies themselves have needs and this was the case recently with CJCOHN.
The agency's food storage facility was in serious need of renovation and several groups and individuals provided the funding needed to solve this problem, volunteers said.

Benton explodes on Greenbrier, wins tournament with ease

BENTON – The Lady Panthers did something Saturday that no other Benton High School softball team had completed in a very long time. After getting past Springdale Harber in the first round of the Bootsie Gordon Tournament in Benton, the Lady Panthers beat Dardanelle 6-0 and Nashville 7-0 to advance to the finals against Greenbrier. After a crazy homerun call early in the game, the Lady Panthers prevailed to beat Greenbrier 12-2 to become tournament champions.

Panthers' pitching nearly perfect

BENTON - It was a scoreless game through four innings, but the Benton Panthers came away with a 5-0 victory over the Monticello Billies Friday night in Benton. Junior left-handed started Justin Vincent gave up one hit, a double in the second inning, and retired the last 13 batters he faced. The Panthers retired the last 16 batters of the game.

“He did a great job,” Benton Coach Mark Balisterri said of Vincent.

Sardis woman marks 90th birthday on Sunday

Lexie Magby Spickard will be celebrating a milestone event this Sunday: The lifetime Saline County resident will be observing her 90th birthday.
Spickard said she's grateful for every day and enjoys her life. "I don't feel 90," she said.
"It just doesn't feel like 90 years," she added. "I'm very healthy and happy, and I'm grateful to have such good health.
"I still drive," she added. " I think I'll know when to quit. I don't go very far — just to church and Benton and things."
