Firefighters, deputies respond to fire in Sardis

A fire was reported Friday morning at the former home of a man recently found not guilty of the murders of two brothers in the Sardis community.
Firefighters and Saline County sheriff’s deputies responded to 9800 Hogue Road for a report of a residence on fire.

Clinton Dewitt Spann Jr. lived at this home, but he is not residing there now, said Lt. Scott Courtney, Saline County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.

During a Circuit Court trial earlier this month, Spann was found not guilty of murdering brothers Michael Williams and Donald Williams, who lived near Spann.

BRYANT – Bryant senior guard Jakeria Otey scored a season-high 31 points in a 52-47 victory over the Alma Airedalettes in 7A/6A Central Conference play on Friday at the Hornets Nest. Otey shot 8 of 18 from the field, 12 of 14 from the foul line and 3 of 5 from three.

The Lady Hornets (14-10, 6-5 Central) were up 2-1 early when freshman Raija Todd began a 9-0 run with a 3-pointer assisted by senior Lauren Carroll. Todd picked up a steal and layup before Otey ended the run with a 3-pointer assisted by Carroll for an 11-1 lead.

Leonard Nimoy, famous as Mr. Spock on 'Star Trek,' dies

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Leonard Nimoy, the actor known and loved by generations of "Star Trek" fans as the pointy-eared, purely logical science officer Mr. Spock, has died.

Nimoy died Friday of end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at his Los Angeles home, said his son, Adam Nimoy. He was 83.
