Panthers continue to impress, Cards grab upset

September 18, 2014

With Week 2 in the books, Saline County area teams are starting to get a feel for what they have on both sides of the ball. Benton and Bryant look to have strong forces each week, while Harmony Grove and Bauxite are still working out kinks. Glen Rose, on the other hand, has a lot to work on having started the season 0-2, both losses being blowouts.

Russellville too much for Bryant

September 18, 2014

BRYANT – The Bryant Lady Hornets ran into a tough opponent Tuesday night in Bryant when the Russellville Lady Cyclones swept the Lady Hornets 3-0 (21-25, 11-25, 16-25) in 7A/6A Central Conference play.

“Russellville is a very good team, period,” Bryant Coach Lawrence Jefferson said. “They’re right up there with Texas High we played at Spikefest. I think (Russellville) is a little better. They hit well, they cover well, they pass well, they serve well; I don’t think they did anything bad [Tuesday].”

Test will get harder for Hogs run game

The Arkansas Razorbacks have been the rear end of jokes for the past few seasons. Picked last in the SEC by most at the start of this year, some might want to change that prediction heading into Week 4. Known for their ground game, the Razorbacks showed exactly what SEC running backs can do to a defense, rushing for 438 yards on 68 carries Saturday. Arkansas had more carries than passing yards (61) in its 49-28 win over Texas Tech on Saturday.

PREDICTIONS: Bryant rolls, Bauxite gets win over rival

September 12, 2014

Week 1 of high school football in Saline County was pretty good. Of course, with the Salt Bowl at the top of the list, how could the week be bad? Not to mention it was the greatest Salt Bowl in recent memory with Benton snapping Bryant’s eight-game winning streak, pulling to a 14-14 final.

Harmony Grove won its fifth straight opener against Poyen while Bauxite and Glen Rose fell victim once again in Week 1 contests.

This week, however, should be much different from a week ago. Blowout after blowout is slated for Week 2. Here are my picks for Week 2 of the season:

Touchdown Club kicks off

September 11, 2014

BENTON – Approximately 30 people turned out for the first meeting of the Benton Touchdown Club on Monday, Sept. 8, at Western Sizzlin’. The club is formed specifically for Benton Panthers football and will meet on a monthly basis.

John Ginn, treasurer of the club, welcomed members and introduced Panthers Head Coach Scott Neathery.
“How does it feel to come away from the game with Bryant and still be undefeated?” asked Ginn.

Bryant dominates field

September 10, 2014

LITTLE ROCK – The Bryant Lady Hornets cross country team competed at the Minuteman Cross Country Invitational Saturday held at Western Hills Park in Little Rock.

Bryant started off the regular season in style by winning the team championship in a dominating performance. The Lady Hornets put all their scoring runners in the top 11 places to win with a score of 33 points. LR Christian was runner-up with 51 points followed by Cabot (88), Mount St. Mary (118), Vilonia (132), and Pulaski Academy (168). There were 15 teams and 114 total runners in the race.
