Lipinski receives WWGF scholarship

BENTON — Benton golfer Karli Lipinski was recently honored with a four-year, $8,000 scholarship from the Women’s Western Golf Foundation.
Candidates for the scholarship were selected on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, excellence of character and an involvement in the sport of golf, according to a release from the Foundation. Skill in the sport is not a criterion.

BENTON – Benton Panthers athletics had a pretty solid year, to say the least. The football team had its best season since 2005, finishing 6-6 with a playoff victory. The Benton Panthers basketball team followed their best season ever, record-wise, with their second-best season ever and a consecutive state semifinals appearance. The Lady Panthers volleyball team fell in an epic match in the 6A State Championship game, the baseball team had another 20-win season, not to mention the Lady Panther softball team won the 6A State Championship in an instant classic in Fayetteville.

There have been 215 no-hitters in Major League Baseball since 1904, not including the 23 perfect games in the modern era. With the large quantity of no-no’s in the league coming from hall of famers and regular Joes, the most dominate of them all came Tuesday in Los Angeles.
Dodgers ace and southpaw Clayton Kershaw’s performance against Colorado was above and beyond any other no-hit feat in history. No runs, no hits, no walks and 15 strikeouts in just 107 pitches.

Panthers’ 7-on-7 flexes its guns for 2nd straight tourney win

BENTON – The Benton Panthers 7-on-7 team got to flex its muscles once again as the Panthers defeated Maumelle 28-21 in the championship game of the 1st Annual Benton Panthers 7-on-7 Tournament on Tuesday at Panthers Stadium to win their second straight 7-on-7 tournament.
“They like to flex their muscles so that’s what we do,” Panthers Coach Scott Neathery said. “It’s kind of funny. The kids like to do it. If they win, we let them do it. It’s a good group of kids and they like to have a good time.”

Ezell named Gatorade POY

Talk about capping off your high school career in style. Roughly a month after the Bryant Hornets won their third 7A State Championship in the past five seasons, former Hornets shortstop Trevor Ezell was honored with the Gatorade Player of the Year award on Monday at Bishop Park in Bryant.
“It is kind of hard to believe,” Ezell said. “It is a great honor. I’ve been playing with and against some of the greatest kids in the state, so to be named that really feels special. It is definitely humbling for me.”

Benton's Pfeiffer goes to Orioles

LITTLE ROCK – Former UALR shortstop Austin Pfeiffer has been selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 27th round on the 2014 MLB Draft. In 2014 Pfeiffer hit .253 with five home runs while starting every one of the Trojans 54 games at shortstop.

“Well the first person to contact me was my mother,” Pfeiffer said about how he found out he had been selected. “She called me and told me the good news shortly before the Orioles contacted me.”
Pfeiffer said the Orioles congratulated him and said they look forward to what he can bring to their organization.

BENTON – After a 6-6 record last year, it’s best since the 2005 season, the Benton Panther football team closes its spring portion of its schedule, six practices including Friday night’s spring scrimmage at Panthers Stadium, featuring its hurry-up offense.

It’s not over until it’s over. That could be the new motto for the 2014 Benton Lady Panthers. Down to their last strike and an unlikely hero at the plate in the 6A State Championship game, the Lady Panthers had their lives changed forever.

It took just one swing to rejuvenate a packed house Friday at Bogle Park in Fayetteville. Staring at a full count with two on and down 1, freshman slugger Breanna Langford deposited possibly the biggest hit in school history over the fence in left field.

Hornets down Dogs for 7A Championship

FAYETTEVILLE — Junior Blaine Knight shut down a powerful Fayetteville offense and senior eighth-place hitter Dalton Holt put an exclamation point on a 10-0 Bryant Hornets rout over the Purple Bulldogs with a 2-run bomb to left field in the 7A State Championship game in Fayetteville on Friday. It was the Hornets’ 23rd straight win and they just needed six innings to do it.

FAYETTEVILLE — It was the shot heard around the state. Down one with two on, two out, a full count and freshman Breanna Langford at the plate, Benton’s 6A title hopes looked to be all but demolished Friday at Bogle Park in Fayetteville. That was until Sheridan pitcher Sydney Bonner left a hanger out over the plate that Langford tomahawked into left field for a 3-run, go-ahead blast to put the Lady Panthers in front for good.
