Lady Hornets take 4th at state, Hornets 6th

HOT SPRINGS – Behind an All-State performance by senior Caitlyn Bell, the Bryant Lady Hornet cross country team took fourth place in the team standings at the 7A State Championship held at Oaklawn Park on Saturday. Bentonville won the title with 47 points followed by Rogers (52), Fayetteville (73), Bryant (135), Heritage (144), Har-Ber (178), and Cabot (182). There were 12 teams and 107 runners in the race.

Benton beats Pine Bluff 39-36 to win 6A South title

HOUSTON -- Ryan Mallett's wait to be a starter is over.

After toiling in the shadow of Tom Brady for three seasons in New England and backing up Ryan Fitzpatrick for nine games this year, coach Bill O'Brien said Wednesday that the Houston Texans will bench Fitzpatrick and start Mallett at Cleveland on Nov. 16.

"I've been waiting four years for this," Mallett said. "Now it's my time to have an opportunity to show what I can do."

RECORD SETTER: Jr. Lady Panthers a perfect 9-0

BENTON — It didn’t start well for the Benton Lady Panther ninth-grade team, but it came up victorious over Cabot South for a school-record 9-0 Central Arkansas Junior High Conference mark and finished the regular season 25-3 before the conference tournament on Saturday in Russellville.

The Jr. Lady Panthers were down 12-5 in the first set before coming back to win 26-24, and won the second game easily 25-11 for the match and the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

MAGNOLIA – Benton Junior High volleyball Coach Michelle Shoppach, or otherwise known as “Coach Shoop”, was inducted into the Southern Arkansas University Hall of Fame on Friday in the Grand Hall of the Donald W. Reynolds Campus and Community Center at SAU. A Benton native, Shoppach coached the SAU Lady Mulerider program from 1990 to 1997 and led it to a 157-88 record in her time there.

The 157 wins ranks her second all-time among SAU volleyball coaches, and four of her teams won over 20 matches in a season. Shoppach led the Lady Muleriders to a 32-11 record in 1994.
