Miners clinch conference

BAUXITE – With second place Arkadelphia and Malvern losing on Tuesday night, the Bauxite Miners won beating the Waldron Bulldogs 49-43 to clinch the 7-4A Conference title and clinched the No. 1 seed in the 7-4A District Tournament which Bauxite hosts on Monday at Fred Dawson Gym.

“At the end of the day, we got another win in conference,” Bauxite Coach Andy Brakebill said, “and with Malvern (9-4) and Arkadelphia (9-4) losing, it gave us the outright conference title no matter what happens Friday.”

BRYANT — The Bryant Hornet football team completed one of the most successful seasons in school history in 2014. Finishing with a 9-2-1 overall record, a second-place finish in the 7A/6A Central and a second-round state playoff berth, the Hornets continue to receive high praise.

Devon Waite, who signed with the University of Arkansas - Monticello, was a late bloomer to football. Not getting into the game until his 10th-grade year, he said he never thought he would be where he is today.

Hendrix banking on Black's aggression

BENTON – For the third straight year, the Benton Panthers football team is sending a player off to play at the next level. On Wednesday’s signing day, senior Brandon Black signed to play college football at the Benton Athletic Complex Fieldhouse after the Panthers’ best season to date, finishing 11-1-1 and losing to Pine Bluff in the 6A State Championship game.

Black will play a possible defensive hybrid position with the Hendrix College Warriors (Conway) in the upcoming season.

BRYANT — The Bryant Hornet football team completed one of the most successful seasons in school history in 2014. Finishing with a 9-2-1 overall record, a second-place finish in the 7A/6A Central and a second-round state playoff berth, the Hornets continue to receive high praise.

Brendan Young signed with the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers on Wednesday and was a force for Bryant’s defense, stopping the passing game and making big-time plays in crucial situations for the Hornets in 2014.

Brushawn Hunter missed nearly his entire senior season after exiting the first game with a severly injured foot. But, even though he missed the next 11 games, Hunter still received multiple DII offers before settling with Arkansas Baptist College.

Bryant’s offense revolved around the running game in 2014. Senior offensive lineman Cameron Davis was the big key to success from the backfield, blocking and opening holes for Head Coach Paul Calley’s backs.

Mickle, McElroy, 50 boards propel Lady Cards

HASKELL -- The Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals snapped an eight-game losing streak in dominating fashion Friday night. Coming into the game in much need of a win, the Lady Cardinals defeated Episcopal Collegiate 45-33.

“The kids deserve it anytime you go through what they’ve been through,” Head Coach Chris Smith said. “They have worked hard even through it. I’m glad they got something positive out of it.”

Lady Panthers rein in Fillies

February 5, 2015

BENTON – After starting the season 7-2, the Benton Lady Panthers suffered through a seven-game losing streak to fall to 7-9 on the year, including 0-2 in the 6A South Conference. Since then Benton has won 4 of 5, including three in a row after a 47-40 South victory over visiting Pine Bluff Fillies at Benton Arena on Friday. The win put the Lady Panthers back in the plus column at 11-10 overall and 4-3 in the South.
