State Basketball Games postponed

Because of winter weather which is expected to cover the state with either snow or ice today, the Arkansas Activities Association has postponed Wednesday’s state tournament play in all classes 7A, 6A, 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A).

The postponement will which push the semifinal round in each classification to Sunday, and will keep the State Finals which are scheduled for March 12-14 at Hot Springs’ Bank of the Ozarks Arena on schedule.

Lady Panthers handle Lake Hamilton

PEARCY – After enduring a seven-game losing streak at the end of December and the beginning of January, the Benton Lady Panthers have won 8 of their past 11 games including a 52-43 victory over the Lady Wolves of Lake Hamilton in Pearcy on Friday night. The win boosts Benton to 15-12 overall, 8-5 in the 6A South and drops Lake Hamilton to 2-10 in the South.

The Lady Panthers jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first before the Lady Wolves came back to tie it 7-7 at the end of the quarter. The offense picked up a bit in the second quarter and Benton led 24-21 at the half.

Lady Hornets hold on

BRYANT – Bryant senior guard Jakeria Otey scored a season-high 31 points in a 52-47 victory over the Alma Airedalettes in 7A/6A Central Conference play on Friday at the Hornets Nest. Otey shot 8 of 18 from the field, 12 of 14 from the foul line and 3 of 5 from three.

The Lady Hornets (14-10, 6-5 Central) were up 2-1 early when freshman Raija Todd began a 9-0 run with a 3-pointer assisted by senior Lauren Carroll. Todd picked up a steal and layup before Otey ended the run with a 3-pointer assisted by Carroll for an 11-1 lead.

Bryant dominates district

BRYANT – The Bryant Hornets and Lady Hornets’ swim teams dominated and the Benton High school swim team girls and boys each finished third out of nine girls’ teams and 11 boys’ teams at the South District Championships at the Bishop Park Natatorium this past Friday. The Bauxite boys scored 60 points for sixth place.

Benton can't complete sweep

BENTON – After beating them at their place in January to snap a seven-game losing streak, the Benton Lady Panthers couldn’t get the season sweep of the El Dorado Lady Wildcats due to poor shooting. Benton fell 44-33 to El Dorado on Friday night at Benton Arena, shooting 28 percent from the field.

The Lady Panthers’ two-game win streak was snapped and now sit at 13-12 overall, 6-5 in the 6A South with El Dorado improving to 18-5, 7-4 in the South.

Lady Miners clinch 3rd

ARKADELPHIA – After junior Sarah Cockman scored during the final seconds of the game, the Bauxite Lady Miners defeated the Arkadelphia Lady Badgers 51-20 Friday night in Arkadelphia. The Lady Miners also clinched third in 7-4A Conference with Mena, No. 4, losing to Malvern Friday night. Bauxite Head Coach Cody Lambert said the Lady Miners, which will play on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against the winner of Fountain Lake and Waldron, played well against the Lady Badgers.

BAUXITE – With second place Arkadelphia and Malvern losing on Tuesday night, the Bauxite Miners won beating the Waldron Bulldogs 49-43 to clinch the 7-4A Conference title and clinched the No. 1 seed in the 7-4A District Tournament which Bauxite hosts on Monday at Fred Dawson Gym.

“At the end of the day, we got another win in conference,” Bauxite Coach Andy Brakebill said, “and with Malvern (9-4) and Arkadelphia (9-4) losing, it gave us the outright conference title no matter what happens Friday.”

BRYANT — The Bryant Hornet football team completed one of the most successful seasons in school history in 2014. Finishing with a 9-2-1 overall record, a second-place finish in the 7A/6A Central and a second-round state playoff berth, the Hornets continue to receive high praise.

Devon Waite, who signed with the University of Arkansas - Monticello, was a late bloomer to football. Not getting into the game until his 10th-grade year, he said he never thought he would be where he is today.

Hendrix banking on Black's aggression

BENTON – For the third straight year, the Benton Panthers football team is sending a player off to play at the next level. On Wednesday’s signing day, senior Brandon Black signed to play college football at the Benton Athletic Complex Fieldhouse after the Panthers’ best season to date, finishing 11-1-1 and losing to Pine Bluff in the 6A State Championship game.

Black will play a possible defensive hybrid position with the Hendrix College Warriors (Conway) in the upcoming season.
