Bryant and Benton back on the blocks

The Bryant Hornets swimming and diving team competed Tuesday evening, Dec. 6, in the Catholic High School 50/100 Sprint Swim Meet at the University of Arkansas Little Rock in the dive portion. For the boys, Justin Combs took third place, Lucas Reitenger placed fifth place and Scott Mead finished in sixth place overall.

For the Bryant girls, Alise Heavrin came in fourth place, Tiffany Robinson took sixth, Kaitlin Howey seventh and Morganne Gillespie finished in eighth place.

Lady Miners rout, Miners blow lead

A close game at the half turned into a 70-50 blowout favoring the Bauxite Lady Miners over the Brinkley Lady Tigers on Tuesday at Brinkley High School.

Leading 14-10 after the first quarter, the Lady Miners led by as many as seven points in the first half, eventually taking a 31-29 lead at halftime. Junior Mary Crow scored 15 of her 20 points in the first half and also took two charge calls.

"It was a little bit of a track meet the first half," Bauxite Coach Josh Harrison said. "We were scoring. We were getting up and down the floor.

The Bauxite Lady Miners made it to the finals of the Harmony Grove annual Bill Gibbs Memorial tournament on Saturday after beating Poyen 62-27 and Perryville 51-30. The Miners had a tough test in front of them on Saturday in the Mt. Vernon Lady Warhawks.
The Lady Miners used good execution and a bit of good luck to down the Lady Warhawks to take the tournament championship in a thriller 52-48. Senior Alaina Crouse led the Lady Miners with 19 points. Junior Mary Crow was in foul trouble early and sat for more than half of the game.

Bryant native not ‘too old,’ bags 8-point deer

Have you ever used the phrase, “I’m getting too old for this?” Well, it doesn’t apply to Bryant native Frank Myers Sr.
Myers, who will turn 93-years-old on Dec. 9, shot an 8-point deer from about 50 yards away over the Thanksgiving weekend at his son’s deer camp in Union County.
“He invites me down every year on Thanksgiving day to his camp down in south Arkansas,” Myers said of his son. “They hadn’t seen many deer, but I saw five doe, four yearlings and the one buck. He just came walking out of the brush there, turned his side to me, so well, ‘You’re mine.’”

Bauxite moves on in tourney

The second round of the consolation side of the Bill Gibbs Memorial Tournament bracket resumed Wednesday with three Saline County Teams battling to play on Saturday. The first of the three being the Bauxite boys team in a contest with Carlisle, which lost to Poyen on Tuesday.
The Miners, which lost to a well-coached and athletic Perryville team on Monday, came out a little stiff on Wednesday, but quickly turned up the heat on their way to a 51-30 rout of Carlisle.
The Miners missed a few early buckets before getting on the board to tie the game at two on a Tyler Hill field goal.

Glen Rose boys, girls win big

Coming off a loss and then playing again the next night might be tough for some high school basketball teams. But, for Glen Rose, that is just motivation for the next game.
Both Glen Rose teams lost on Tuesday night to Mount Vernon in routs. But, Wednesday was full of Beaver fever as both the boys and girls won in routs themselves. The girls kicked off the action with a 57-32 domination of Woodlawn, followed by a 37-23 win for the boys.
The Lady Beavers could not get a shot to fall in the first game on Tuesday.

Cardinals, Lady Cardinals winners in first round

The Harmony Grove Cardinals basketball teams kicked off their portion of the Bill Gibbs Memorial Tournament in Haskell last night against the Woodlawn Bears and Lady Bears. With the girls looking to move their record to 3-1 on the year and the boys looking for their first win, Harmony Grove stormed through round one of the tournament, sweeping Woodlawn with back-to-back wins. The Lady Cardinals won 49-30 while the boys made it out with a 50-39 showing.

Bryant sweeps Benton in boys, girls

Every high school basketball and football team has a rival. Every team has the school that they absolutely dislike because “hate” is too harsh. But, one thing most schools do not have is a rival that is less than 10 miles away. This can only be said about Benton and Bryant.
Year in and year out, both schools bring huge crowds during the basketball and football seasons. Known for the famous “Salt Bowl” at War Memorial Stadium to open the football season every year, both schools have been known to get pretty heated, both on the court and in the stands.

Lady Miners go 1-2 in tournament; prepare to face Poyen tonight

The Bauxite Lady Miners dropped their final game of the Alumni Girls Classic 61-51 to the Little Rock Central Lady Tigers on Saturday at Little Rock Hall High School.
Bauxite went 1-2 in the tournament, defeating Lonoke 60-41 in the first round and losing to Little Rock Parkview 69-36 in the second round. Parkview won the tournament when they beat North Little Rock 45-37 in the final.
Parkview went to the 6A State Championship last year and Central lost in the first round of the 7A playoffs last year, so the Lady Miners (2-2) had some tough competition to begin the year.

Lady Miners resume play in Alumni Classic tourney

The Bauxite Lady Miners resume play in the Arkansas Girls Alumni Classic at Little Rock Hall High School tonight. The Lady Miners will play the Little Rock Parkview Lady Patriots in the second round at approximately 7 p.m. tonight.
Bauxite (2-0) defeated the Lonoke Lady Jackrabbits 60-41 in the first round of the classic on Monday, while Parkview (1-0) beat Cabot 64-60.
Lady Miners’ senior forward Alaina Crouse leads the team in scoring for the first two games with a 17.0 point-per-game average and is 9 of 12 (75 percent) from the 3-point line.
