Lady Hornets ready to be Reddies

February 14, 2014

BRYANT – There was little doubt in the minds of a duo of Bryant Lady Hornets of where they were going to college. Senior distance runners Marley Adams and Mikayla Douglas signed letters of intent to run for Henderson State University on Tuesday morning at Bryant High School, and the pair have known for several years they were to become Lady Reddies.
“I’ve wanted to go there since the seventh grade,” Adams said. “I just know they’ve had a really good team. I know upperclassmen that have gone there. It’s always been Henderson.”

Panthers sweep Hornets

February 7, 2014

BRYANT – After the Bryant Lady Hornets came up with the upset victory over their Benton counterparts, the Hornets couldn’t duplicate the feat as the Benton Panthers swept Bryant this season and took the Saline County Shootout trophy with a 73-60 win over Bryant on Wednesday night at the Hornets’ Nest in Bryant.
“The good thing about it is, number one it was a sweep of Bryant,” Benton Coach Dwaine Fishburn said, “number two, now we’re in sole possession of first place, and number three, we’re defending conference champions.”

Bryant OK with Otey

February 7, 2014

BRYANT – After Lady Panther junior Braxton Chumley hit two free throws with 6.3 seconds left to give Benton a 50-49 lead, junior Lady Hornet guard Jakeria Otey dribbled down the left side of the court, drove to the bucket and was the recipient of a foul call as time expired. Otey calmly hit both free throws to give Bryant the 51-50 upset victory over rival Benton in the Saline County Shootout Wednesday night to make up for Tuesday’s postponement due to inclement weather.

Benton loses 2nd straight

February 6, 2014

BENTON – Just as in their blowout loss at El Dorado (49-25) on Tuesday, the Benton Lady Panthers held a three-point lead at halftime against the Pine Bluff Fillies at Benton Arena on Tuesday, but couldn’t hold on and fell 38-36 in 7A/6A South Conference play.
“We just had a couple things not go our way,” Benton Coach Jerry Chumley said. “It was a battle right there to the end. We were down, fought hard and gave ourselves a chance to tie and win it, we just didn’t make it happen there at the end.”

Miners snap streak

January 31, 2014

ASHDOWN – The Bauxite Miners defeated the Ashdown Panthers 58-50 on the road to snap a five-game losing streak in 7-4A Conference play on Tuesday.
“We started off kind of slow,” Bauxite Coach Andy Brakebill said. “The body language was kind of iffy. It’s one of those deals you lose five in a row and your confidence is shaken. It was almost like, ‘Oh no, here we go again.’ We finally got to clicking a little bit better.”

Panthers whip Wildcats

January 30, 2014

EL DORADO – After an uninspiring first half of play, the Benton Panthers took it to the El Dorado Wildcats 65-39 in 7A/6A South Conference play on Tuesday night in El Dorado. The Panthers improve to 14-5 overall and 5-1 in the South.
“I thought the first half, rebounding-wise, we were very lackadaisical,” Benton Coach Dwaine Fishburn said. “We let their athleticism get to us. They hit the boards hard against us. I was disappointed by our defensive rebounding.
“We weren’t hungry or played with a purpose in the first half.”

After falling to the Eagles earlier in the season, 54-52, the Cardinals hoped for revenge, but the athleticism and guard play of Mayflower was too much in the loss.
