Panthers handle Hornets

January 8, 2015

BENTON – After beating the Bryant Hornets 55-45 in the first game of the season, the Benton Panthers made it a clean sweep with a 54-48 win over the Hornets in the Saline County Shootout on Tuesday night in Benton Arena.

“That was our 13th game,” Benton Coach Dexter Hendrix said. “Being a young, inexperienced team like we are and that’s only our second home game. I think we’re still learning the importance of how to protect our home court. I didn’t think we did that in the first half. They outplayed us and were real physical and it took us a while to respond.

Bryant downs Benton in Shootout

BENTON – Behind 22 points from senior Jakeria Otey, the Bryant Lady Hornets topped a struggling Benton Lady Panthers squad 41-34 in the Saline County Shootout on Tuesday at Benton Arena. Otey hit 10 of 12 free throws in the second half to help extend Bryant’s lead.

“I thought the fourth quarter we took care of the ball better,” Bryant Coach Brad Matthews said. “I thought we executed and Jakeria was able to get in the lane and make some positive things happen. Offensively and defensively we made enough plays down the stretch.”

Next Week’s Matchups:

Dallas @ Green Bay

What to watch for:

Dallas will travel to Green Bay to face Aaron Rodgers and their dynamic offense. Green Bay has not lost at Lambeau Field yet this year. Dallas matches up well with Green Bay because they have a strong running game that can keep the clock running and keep the ball out of Green Bay’s hands. The weather might get the best out of Dallas as it is likely to be extremely cold. Green Bay’s offense will be looking to feast on a weak Dallas secondary.

Pick: Green Bay 31-24

Carolina @ Seattle

January 2, 2015

CLINTON – The Bauxite Miners defeated the Clinton Yellowjackets 67-50 in the championship game of the Clinton Christmas Classic on Tuesday to win their second straight tournament. The Miners won the Bill Gibbs Memorial in Haskell earlier this season and also defended their Clinton title, winning the tournament last year as well.

“It was a good little tune-up before we get into the grind of conference,” Bauxite Coach Andy Brakebill said. “It was good to defend the title and get the win.”

Jr. Panthers a win away

BENTON – The Benton Junior Panthers were without their leading scorer Jai Peters in the second round of the Benton Christmas Classic on Tuesday against North Pulaski, but the Panthers improved to 9-3 with a 33-26 win at Benton Middle School. Benton will face El Dorado today at 12:30 p.m. in the final tourney contest.

Peters played in Monday’s win over J.A. Fair, but Benton Coach David Torres said he was going with caution on Tuesday.
