Barney Melton Sikes Jr. of Benton passed away Saturday, July 27, 2013, at the age of 74 in Little Rock.
He was born Oct. 20, 1938, in Montrose to the late Barney Sr. and Pearlie Mae (Mitchell) Sikes.Â He retired from Reynolds Metals Co. as the plant engineer in 2001.Â He was also vice president of Hurricane Creek CU board and spent time volunteering with Habitat for Humanity.
Barney enjoyed traveling, spending time with and cooking for family and friends, and most of all sitting on his deck overlooking the river.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Harold, Preston, Henry and Russell Tankersley; a sister, Helen Smith; his mother-in-law, Ruth Earl; and a brother-in-law, John Earl.
Barney is survived by his wife, Sarah (Sally Earl) Sikes of Benton; daughters, Viki Anderson and husband Nathan of Shannon Hills and Stephanie Davis and husband Stevie of Houston; and Sarahâ€™s kids, Keith Darren and wife Angie and Wendy Pitre and husband Richard of Galliano, La.; a stepson, DeWayne Hall of Benton; his sister, Louise Coon and husband Jim of Alexander; a sister-in-law, Veda Tankersley of Crossett; his father-in-law, David Earl of Benton; and a sister-in-law, Judy Roberson of Larose, La.Â
He is also survived by the mother of his children, Joyce Hall and husband Randall; 11 grandchildren, Garron, Codey, Brian, Elizabeth, Charles, Ramie, Brisk, Sid, Brayten, Brhea and Darren Jr. He was Grandpa Barney to his great-granddaughter, Kali Grace Spickard and to Sarahâ€™s five great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, at Mt. Harmony Cemetery in Haskell with the Rev. Greg Kirksey officiating. Burial will be by Ashby Funeral Home.
Scheduled to serve as pallbearers are Garron Spickard, Codey Davis, Brian Morris, Darren Pitre, Richard Pitre and Keith Edwards.Â Honorary pallbearers are members of the board and advisory committee of Hurricane Creek Credit Union.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 29, at the funeral home.Â
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity, the National Cancer Society or Arkansas Hospice.
