Neither the Miners nor the Lady Miners will be advancing to the 4A Regional Tournament after losing Friday night in each respective 4A-7 District Tournament.
Both lost to Ashdown, the Miners falling 10-6 in six innings and the Lady Miners losing 7-6 in seven.
The Miners, a No. 6 seed in the tournament held in De Queen, beat Oak Grove Thursday to advance to the game against No. 3 seed Ashdown.
The Lady Miners played two games Friday during their tournament, which was held in Ashdown, winning the first 13-3 against Pulaski Academy, but eventually losing the second to Ashdown.
Head coach Wes Mode said the Lady Miners were ahead 6-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Ashdown scored three runs in its last trip to the plate for the win.
“It’s tough when you lead most of the game and let it slip away,” he said. “They battled real hard, though, and I’m proud of them.”
As a No. 5 seed, the Lady Miners (8-13, 2-3 4A-7) needed two tournament wins to advance to the semifinals, which would give them an automatic birth into the regional tournament.
The same was the case for the Miners, who ended the season with an overall record of 12-13 (2-4 4A-5).
Junior Bethany Edwards pitched both games for the Lady Miners. Against Pulaski Academy, she struck out six batters and walked five while allowing four hits.
Offensively for the Lady Miners, senior Elizabeth Harris was 3-4 with two RBIs, and Edwards was 3-4 with one RBI. Senior Haley Davis went 3-4 with one RBI, and freshman Kati Daly was 3-4 with two RBIs.
Against Ashdown, Edwards only gave up three hits while walking five and striking out five.
After three innings, the game was tied 2-2. The Lady Miners went on to score two runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and Ashdown scored two of its own in the sixth.
However, the Lady Miners couldn’t stop Ashdown from scoring its third run in the seventh, which won the game.
