Bauxite wins conference opener

December 12, 2012

Junior forward Allison Tackett goes up for a layup in the Lady Miner’s 52-41 win over Nashville on Tuesday night. Tackett scored 14 points and had seven rebounds.

BAUXITE – The Bauxite Lady Miners started 7-4A conference play right with a 52-41 win over the Nashville Lady Scrappers on Tuesday night at Fred Dawson Gym in Bauxite. A slow first half led to a stagnant game early, but the Lady Miners woke up in the second half.
Bauxite (8-4, 1-0 7-4A) jumped to a 10-2 lead to begin the game, but the Lady Scrappers scrapped their way back to make it a 13-8 Nashville deficit at the end of one. The Lady Miners would go into a lull in the second quarter getting outscored 10-5 resulting in a tie, 18-18, game at the half.
“We shot a bunch of threes in the first half,” Bauxite Coach Josh Harrison said. “They were in a zone and we were just settling for the easy look as opposed to working for the better look.
“It wasn’t pretty, but second half we played much better. We just had more intensity on offense. We moved a little better with purpose. The second half, Allison [Tackett] did a really good job of getting the gaps and finding open spots. Mary [Crow] hit a couple big threes and we shot free throws very well.”
The Lady Miners shot 17 of 18 from the free-throw line for the game with Crow hitting 11 for 11. After scoring just four points in the first half, Crow finished with 21 points, five steals, five assists and five rebounds. Tackett had three points at the half, but finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.
“She did a really good job hitting the boards, especially on the defensive side,” Harrison said of Tackett. “She did a great job moving on offense, cutting without the ball.”
After outscoring Nashville 13-8 in the third to take a 31-26 lead, Bauxite was up just five points midway through the fourth quarter before Crow hit 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to push the lead into double digits.
Senior Morgan Case had six points and senior Makayla Blanchett had four.
“Defensively I thought we played really well,” Harrison said. “The girl that we put [Tackett] on is one of their leading scorers and she held her to one point. That girl scored the one point when [Tackett] was getting a break. They’ve got a pretty lanky guard/forward that likes to step out and shoot the three and Allison did a great job on her.”
The Lady Miners lost to the Riverview Lady Raiders 48-39 on Friday.
Tackett scored 14 points in the loss, with Blachett following with eight and Crow with seven.
Bauxite will travel to Ashdown on Friday to take on the Lady Panthers. Tip-off will be at 6 p.m.
