September 15, 2011

Emily Parker, left, and Any Jivan defeat El Dorado’s Brown and McMahen 8-1 Tuesday afternoon at Tyndall Park.

The Benton Panther boys tennis team was able to win three out of five matches against El Dorado and Little Rock McClellan Tuesday night at Tyndall Park in Benton.
Benton senior Eric Emmons lost to El Dorado’s Taylor Thomas 6-8 and senior Austin Willis defeated Drew Hazen 8-5.
Sophomore Trey Young lost to El Dorado’s Lawson Smith 3-6 and freshman Morgan Smith defeated McClellan’s Justin Washington 8-5. Senior Nathan Perry defeated El Dorado’s Thomas 6-1.
“We had kind of a rough day,” coach Justin Warner said. “It was probably the roughest day we’ve had since the season started.”
Warner said he put his No. 2 boys double against their No. 1 boys double and “they struggled.”
“But that is to be expected,” Warner said. “They would be the first to tell you they had hoped to play better.”
In doubles competition, Benton seniors Sam Anderson and Jake Jakonczuk lost to El Dorado’s Smith and Mason by a score of 3-8.
“Hopefully we have faced some of that adversity and it will prepare us for conference and the state tournament,” Warner said.
Seniors Ian McMahn and Dudley Stow defeated Blackburn and Atkinson 9-7 in doubles.
“We were just not feeling it today,” Warner said.
Warner said he was ‘very impressed’ with Perry, who defeated El Dorado’s Thomas.
“I think Thomas expected an easy match and Nathan beat him,” Warner said. “I was very impressed with how Nathan played.”
For the girls, Lauren Dudley defeated Hannah Caswell 8-1 in singles competition. Junior Leigha Stone lost to El Dorado’s Laura Rogers 1-8 and senior Morgan Henderson lost to Chalelita Flores 0-6.
In doubles competition, Benton sophomore Abby McAtee and senior Mariah Temple defeated Thomas and Greer 8-2. Seniors Emily Parker and Any Jivan defeated Brown and McMahen 8-1.
Warner said he also put his girls No. 2 against El Dorado’s No. 1 to try to get better seeding in the conference tournament.
“They were a little nervous playing against a No. 1 team, but they shook off the jitters and pulled off a convincing win,” Warner said. “I was really proud of them.”
Benton seniors Alex Guess and Morgan Henderson lost to El Dorado’s Thomas and Greer 1-6. Juniors Lauren Vandenberg and Hannah Wilson lost to McMahen and Brown 1-6.
Benton is scheduled to play again on Saturday at a Henderson State Tournament beginning at 8:30 a.m.
