BENTON -- On Saturday night around 7:55, officers from the Benton Police Department were dispatched to Denton’s Trotline after receiving a call that a “very intoxicated individual” was getting into a vehicle in the parking lot, according to a statement released just after midnight by Lt. Kevin Russell.
Upon arrival, the individual was identified as Saline County Sheriff Bruce Pennington, 62. Pennington was reportedly sitting in the parked vehicle with the ignition still turned off. According to the statement the officers believed Pennington to be “intoxicated and attempted to convince him to have somebody pick him up.”
After a short conversation the officers reported that Pennington became belligerent and was then placed under arrest. He was transported to the Benton Police Department for processing without further incident moments later.
According to the statement, given the unique situation, Pennington was not detained in the Saline County Detention Facility. Chief Deputy Bill Fields of the Saline County Sheriff’s Department was contacted and agreed to releasing Pennington to a family member.
Pennington was cited for public intoxication and refusal to submit to arrest. The case is still an ongoing investigation. More information will be reported as it becomes available.
