Bryant sweeps Van Buren

The Bryant Hornets scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat Van Buren 5-4 in the second game of a double header Friday night.
After winning the first game 12-2, the Hornets had to hold off a 7th inning rally by the Pointers to earn the sweep. WIth one out, Van Buren would load the bases thanks to a walk, and a pair of singles. Bryant pitcher Dylan Cross would get out of it, striking out the two final batters.
In the bottom of the fifth, Tyler Nelson led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Brown. An error allowed both runners to be safe and make it to second and third. Jordan Taylor hit a double to left field to plate both Nelson and Brown to tie the game at 4 a piece.
An out later, Chris Joiner was hit by a pitch and Bryant had runners on the corners after pinch runner Trent Rivers had tagged up and advanced to third on a fly ball out. Josh Pultro hit a single to left to score Rivers and Joiner advanced to second. The inning ended on a ground ball out by Hayden Lessonberry.
A single in the top of the fifth inning scored two runs to give Van Buren a 4-2 lead.
Bryant tied the game in the bottom of the third. Lessonberry led off with a single to center field and after a courtesy runner, Nelson hit a double to right field which allowed courtesy runner Tyler Green to score. A single and a fielder’s choice would plate Nelson to tie the game at 2-2.
A RBI single and a RBI double in the top of the first by Van Buren gave the Pointers a 2-0 lead.
Caleb Milam pitched six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Cross pitched an inning of relief, allowing just two hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Nelson was 1-3 with two runs, a walk and a RBI. Brown was 1-2 with a run and Taylor was 2-3 with three RBIs.
Pultro was 1-2 with a walk and a RBI. Jobe was 1-2 with a walk and Lessonberry had a hit. Green and Rivers both scored runs.
The Hornets are scheduled to host Monticello today at 5 p.m.
