Bryant wins final game of invitational
The Bryant Hornets defeated East Ridge High School (Fla.) 4-2 Friday night to win the Northwest Powerade Classic in Sanford, Fla.
The Hornets scored two runs in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth, and withstood a rally by East Ridge to complete the tournament sweep.
Landon Pickett led off the bottom of the second with a single to right field. After a strikeout, Evan Jobe singled to right field between first and second to put runners on first and second.
A single to left by Hayden Lessonberry loaded the bases for Hayden Daniel. After Marcus Wilson ran for Lessonberry, Daniel would reach on an error by the third baseman which scored Pickett from third. A ground out by Tyler Nelson scored Jobe to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead.
A sacrifice fly by Pickett in the bottom of the third scored Jason Taylor, who doubled to lead off the inning.
Jobe led off the fourth inning with a single to left field. A single by Lessonberry would put runners on first and third with no body out. Wilson ran for Lessonberry again and would advance to second on a walk to Daniel.
Nelson's single to right field scored Jobe to give Bryant a 4-1 lead.
East Ridge scored a run in the fifth inning to trim the deficit to 4-2 but that would be as close as they would get.
Nelson was one for four at the plate with two runs-batted in, while Castleberry was 1-4. Taylor was 1-3 with a run scored, and Pickett was 1-2 with a run and one RBI. Jobe was 2-3 with two runs scored.
Lessonberry was 2-2 with a walk, and Daniel was 0-1 with a walk.
Caleb Milam pitched seven innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts.
The Hornets will play again on Thursday in a double-header against Cabot beginning at 5 p.m.
