The Bryant Lady Hornets overcame 19 turnovers to defeat the Maumelle Lady Hornets 39-27 in the second round of the OrthoArkansas Tournament at Central Arkansas Christian on Friday night. The Lady Hornets played well defensively, holding Maumelle to just 22 percent shooting, while hitting double that, 44 percent.
"We executed in spurts," Bryant Coach Brad Matthews said. "You still have to be able to execute with the pressure and getting into the passing lanes. I'm proud of our kids. They have some good talent over there."
Bryant (3-2) had to deal with swarming defense from their counterpart Hornets, but Bryant did what it had to do to hold Maumelle at bay. Bryant led 10-3 after the first quarter and used a 12-0 run between the first and second to go up 17-3 after junior Dezarea Duckworth 3-pointer with 5:18 left in the half.
Maumelle would score six points in a row before Duckworth nailed another three, and after air-balling her first 3-point attempt, junior guard Peyton Weaver came back and hit a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left to give the Lady Hornets a 23-9 lead at halftime.
Maumelle scored the first five points of the third quarter to get within nine points, but senior forward Courtney Davidson capped a 6-2 run with consecutive buckets to put Bryant up 29-16 with 4:15 left in the third.
"Courtney played well," Matthews said of the Bryant player of the game. "I thought she got some big rebounds for us. We're asking her to do more offensively than she has been asked to do in the past. She's more than capable. She's a talented kid. As she gets more comfortable in her role, she's just going to continue to improve as we go forward."
Davidson finished with a double-double 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Duckworth had 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Senior Logan Davis had eight points.
Bryant played CAC on Saturday night and results will be in Monday's sports section.
