Countdown: T minus 7 days
By Brent Davis
Unless you have been living under a rock for the past several months, you know the story of the Mayan calendar and how it is said to predict the end of the world as we know it on December 21, 2012. Hence, the countdown has begun.
T-minus one year and counting.
If the Mayans were actually blessed with the gift of precognition, would the knowledge of a mere three hundred sixty-five days until we gather before St. Peter change the way we live going forward? Probably so. We would probably see the true nature of who we are evident through the acts we show to others. Underneath all the layers the world heaps upon us, we are still optimists at our core. It's just that sometimes the layers get too thick and dwarf what should be a giant.
But it also goes to the old adage that we tend to see what we are looking for. Is the glass half full or half empty. In either case it may not actually matter if you take the stand of making the best with what you have.
Country singer Tim McGraw wrote a song about a man who found out he had a short time to live. The doctor tells the man that if he, the doctor, had just found out he had a short time to live, he would be the man he intended to be but never seemed to have to time to become. He'd be the husband and friend he should have been. He'd give forgiveness that he had been denying. He'd live like he was dying.
If the Mayans are right, perhaps the song gives good advice. It's even better advice if they are wrong.
