RICK NATION/Special to the Saline Courier Junior Lady Hornet guard Dezarea Duckworth, 5, dribbles in a game against Benton last week. Duckworth scored nine points, had seven rebounds and two assists in Bryant’s 40-39 loss to Pine Bluff on Tuesday at Pine Bluff.

PINE BLUFF- The Bryant Lady Hornets lost a heartbreaker 40-39 to the Pine Bluff Lady Zebras on Tuesday night at McFadden Field House.
“I thought we really played really well in the second half,” Bryant Coach Brad Matthews said. “[We] made a run at them and got the lead. They made a play with a second to go to beat us. We’ll keep working to get better.”
After trailing nearly the whole game, Bryant led 39-38 with nine seconds left in the fourth quarter on a nice move inside by senior forward Courtney Davidson. Pine Bluff worked the ball to guard Victoria Broady, who scored her only points of the night hitting a contested 18-foot jump shot with 1.3 seconds on the clock. Bryant threw the ball down the court, but couldn’t manage to get a shot off as Pine Bluff escaped with a victory on their home court.
Bryant was led offensively by Davidson, who led all scorers with 19 points. She also went 8 of 10 from the free-throw line and added five rebounds. Pine Bluff was led by guard Asia Richardson who had 11 points.
The Hornets and Zebras battled closely to start the game with Pine Bluff leading 11-10 at the end of the first quarter. Pine Bluff then went on a 14-3 run in the second quarter led by Richardson to lead 25-13 at halftime. Bryant would respond in the third quarter with a 13-5 run of its own. With 2:30 left in the third, junior guard Dezarea Duckworth hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 27-22. On their next possession Duckworth made a nice pass to senior guard Logan Davis who hit the layup to trim the lead to three points.
With Pine Buff claiming a four-point lead to start the fourth, Bryant would take their first lead of the night with 3:44 left in the game on a basket by sophomore guard Jayla Anderson. Bryant and Pine Bluff would trade baskets until the final seconds to set up Broady’s game-winning shot.
“She (Broady) made a play,” Matthews said. “Give her credit, she made a play. We’ll learn from it and move on.”
Along with Davidson, Bryant was led by Duckworth, who finished the night with nine points, seven rebounds and two assists. Davis also added nine points and Anderson finished with two points.
