PEARCY – Senior starting pitcher Nate Rutherford pitched a complete-game shutout and junior shortstop Trevor Ezell went 3 for 4 in the Bryant Hornets 6-0 victory over the Lake Hamilton Wolves in 7A/6A South conference action on Tuesday.
Rutherford needed just 61 pitches in seven innings for the win. He struck out four and gave up six hits without a walk.
Scoreless until the top of the third, sophomore Trey Breeding drew a one-out walk, and after a strikeout for the second out, Ezell singled to put runners at first and second before senior outfielder Marcus Wilson scored Breeding with a double for a 1-0 lead. The Hornets (24-5, 12-1 South) would put another on the board in the top of the fourth when Korey Thompson hit a one-out double and eventually scored on Jason Hastings’ sacrifice fly for the 2-0 advantage.
“We got some timely hits right there to push us over the edge,” Bryant Coach Kirk Bock said. “A good solid performance by Nate, and a good, solid performance defensively.”
Bryant would break the game open in the top of the sixth when the Hornets put a 4-spot capped by consecutive Ezell and Wilson doubles.
After Ezell’s 3 for 4 performance, Wilson went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and sophomore third baseman Brandan Warner went 2 for 4 with an RBI.
“Warner is continuing to do a good job in that 8-hole,” Bock said. “Ezell is seeing it well right now. He’s done a really good job for us.”
The Hornets will take on El Dorado on Friday in the final South conference game of the year at home, and will play Camden on Saturday at Hornets Field.
