Hornets look to pull away with doubleheader

April 21, 2011

Bryant’s Evan Jobe and the Hornets are scheduled to face Van Buren in a doubleheader today at home beginning at 4 p.m. MATT TRAUSCHKE/Special to the Courier

With a two-game lead in the 6A South, Bryant is looking to distance itself from the competition in a doubleheader with Van Buren today.
Weather permitting, Bryant will host Van Buren beginning at 4 p.m. However, head coach Mike Bock said there are a handful of options “depending on what the weather does.”
If needed, Bock said both teams could play today at UALR’s Curran Conway Field, or the Hornets could jump on a bus and head to Van Buren.
Also, the game could be rescheduled for tomorrow at either Sheridan or Van Buren.
The last time the two teams met was in the championship game of the 2010 State Tournament, which Bryant won 12-0 thanks to a perfect game pitched by Ben Wells, who singed with the Chicago Cubs latst year.
But, Bock said last year’s game isn’t even on the Hornets’ radar.
“We’re not thinking about the rematch part,” he said. “We’re two games up on everybody, and we need to separate ourselves.”
The Hornets, who are 16-4 overall (6-2 6A South) and ranked eighth nationally going into today’s game, will start junior Jordan Taylor and senior Caleb Milam, Bock said.
Taylor is unbeaten with four wins in four starts, and Milam is 5-2. Both have an earned-run-average of less than 2.00.
