Lady Hornets regain conference lead

April 29, 2011

With North Little Rock losing twice to Russellville in a doubleheader Wednesday, Bryant has retaken first place in the 7A Central Conference.
Thursday the Lady Hornets faced the team that handed North Little Rock its only losses of the season, and won decidedly 10-0 in six innings.
Head coach Debbie Clark said, “I was very pleased with their discipline and team play.”
Clark said pitcher Peyton Jenkins had been feeling under the weather, so she asked the Lady Hornets to take their time at the plate in order to give Jenkins time to rest between innings.
“They really worked the pitcher,” she said. “Jessie Taylor hates to walk and she walked twice.”
Jenkins went on to pitch five hitless innings before giving up one in the Lady Hornets’ last trip out in the field. In fact, Russellville never had a runner on base through five innings.
“She had a perfect game until the end,” Clark said. “She was really in the zone. It was one of her best games all year since the Tournament of Champions in North Little Rock.”
In all, Jenkins struck out 10 of the 19 batters she faced.
“It was awesome, especially with her not feeling well,” Clark said. “We looked really good yesterday.”
Bryant (17-4, 7-1 7A Central) hosts Little Rock Central today at 5 p.m. Thursday’s game was the Lady Hornets’ first since losing to North Little Rock April 14.
Bryant was ahead 6-0 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but rallied to score four runs, two of which were driven in by Katie Stillman, and have the game called.
The Lady Hornets scored 10 runs on 12 hits. Bryant scored two runs in the second inning, three in the third and one in the fifth.
Jenkins had two hits with one RBI. Ashley Chaloner, who was celebrating her birthday, had four hits, including a home run, and had three RBIs.
“I told her dad, who brought cupcakes, that we’re going to have to pretend it’s her birthday every game,” Clark said.
