The Bryant Lady Hornets improved to 2-0 in 7A Central conference play when they defeated the Van Buren Lady Pointers 49-46 on Tuesday in Van Buren.

Up 47-46 with 10 seconds left, Bryant’s Kiara Moore hit two free throws to seal the game.

“My kids played really well,” Bryant Coach Brad Matthews said. “The Democrat [Gazette] ranked Van Buren second in class 6A. Any time you win on the road, it’s a good win.”

The Lady Hornets (10-6, 2-0) led 20-18 at the half in a back-and-forth game and led by eight in the third quarter before the Lady Pointers made a comeback in the fourth. No team really took control of the game.

“That’s how it is in 7A,” Matthews said. “That’s how it is in conference play. Teams know each other well and it’s hard to put them away, especially Van Buren. They’re really talented and really well-coached, and it’s a really good road win for our kids. Hopefully it will build some confidence as we head into the rest of our conference schedule.”

Moore led Bryant with 21 points and sophomore Taneasha Rhode had 16 points and nine rebounds. Junior Logan Davis scored just two points, but helped the team in other ways.
“Logan Davis had a really good game,” Matthews said. “She only scored two points, but I thought Logan really defended and showed some toughness tonight. She’s a little banged up right now, but I thought she really gutted it out and played hard. She showed a lot of character and toughness tonight.”

Bryant will take on the Russellville Lady Cyclones on Friday in Bryant.
