DUMAS – On paper, it was supposed to be no contest. But the Bauxite Lady Miners certainly contested though they fell short in a 44-33 season-ending loss to the Star City Lady Bulldogs in the opening round of the Class 4A South Region on Wednesday.
“I told the girls before the game that I felt like we were the only 20 people in the state that had a chance to beat this team,” said Bauxite head coach Joshua Harrison.
On paper it was to be a mismatch. The Lady Bulldogs had only one loss to Monticello while the Lady Miners had nearly a dozen losses under their belt and carried a four seed into the tournament in what Harrison said is one of the toughest leagues in which to compete.
The Lady Miners (19-12) gave nothing away in the first half. Buckets by Allison Tackett and Makayla Blanchett and a pair of foul shots by Mary Crow kept the Lady Miners to within three points at 11-8 after the first quarter.
Star City’s Laurin Pooree’s two 3-point shots kept the Lady Bulldogs in front.
The second quarter was even tighter. Crow had three buckets accounting for six of her team-high 14 points and only trailed Star City 23-19 at the half.
At that point, the Lady Miners were in excellent position.
“I want to be a possession or two down in the last two minutes,” said Harrison.
But the third quarter was their undoing.
The Lady Miners could get nothing on the offensive end scoring just two points the entire period.
“I think fatigue got us a little bit,” said Harrison.
Another factor, Harrison said, was that he didn’t believe Crow was completely healthy.
“I don’t truly believe Mary is 100 percent,” Harrison said. “She made some decisions that she doesn’t normally do to try to force some things that we don’t normally do. I think we forced some stuff.”
The end result was a season-ending loss for the team with just one lone senior and four sophomores that have logged significant minutes throughout the year.
“We just fell a little short tonight,” Harrison said. “It was not for lack of effort.”View more articles in:
