POYEN – The Bauxite Lady Miners picked up a non-conference victory 6-4 over the Poyen Lady Indians on Tuesday in Poyen.

“We finally won a close one,” Bauxite Coach Wes Mode said. “We’ve had games where we had the lead and lost it.”

The Lady Miners (4-7, 1-3 7-4A) scored a run each in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings, and scored two in the third inning.

In the first inning, junior Allie Beech drew a bases-loaded walk after runners reached on an error, a walk and a single. The Lady Miners scored on a passed ball in the second inning.

Beech doubled and scored when senior Shelby Durbin singled in the third inning and Durbin scored herself when sophomore Amy Etheridge had an RBI groundout.

Beech continued her hot game when she tripled and scored on a passed ball in the fourth and Bauxite picked up their sixth and final run in the fifth inning when Etheridge doubled and sophomore Kati Daley traded places with her with a double.

Poyen scored its runs in the first and fifth innings. The Lady Indians scored one in the first and three in the fifth without a hit. Senior Bauxite starting pitcher Bethany Edwards had a wild inning when and error by the right fielder and five walks from Edwards led to the three runs.

“Bethany struggled that inning,” Mode said. “We usually have one crazy inning a game.”

Edwards got the complete-game win and gave up only three hits, but she walked 11 while striking out 14.

Beech finished 2 for 3 with a double and triple, Edwards went 2 for 4 and senior Taylor Hatten went 2 for 4 with a run as the Lady Miners finished with nine hits.

Beech went 2 for 3 with double and triple, Edwards went 2 for 4 and Hatten went 2 for 4 with a run. Out of nine hits.

“We’ve struggled so bad hitting it lately,” Mode said sounding relieved for the nine hits. “We got a little better tonight hitting. We’re going to have to do a lot better job hitting if we’re going to compete in the rest of our conference games and district tournament.”

The Lady Miners get back into 7-4A conference play when they make the trek to Dequeen on Friday. Bauxite was supposed to play Maumelle on Monday, but will play the Lady Hornets on Thursday, April 19, taking the place of Fountain Lake which was originally scheduled.
