CONWAY – The Benton Lady Panthers came out of the gates hot, but fell 3-1 to the Conway Lady Wampus Cats in Conway on Thursday night. Benton took the first set 25-18 before Conway returned the favor in the second set with a 25-18 win of its own, and won the last two sets 25-19 and 25-16.
“They’re very competitive,” Benton Coach Brandy Chumley said of Conway. “It was a good team to play to see where our weaknesses are and what we need to work on to try to get us ready for our conference play. They’re a very good team.”
Senior Allison Reynolds had 15 kills to lead the Lady Panthers, while junior Braxton Chumley had 14 assists for the team lead. Senior Jennie Hastings and junior Ashlie Dintleman each had three kills and junior Taylor Lindberg had five assists.
“I thought we had a lot of positives, we just had too many errors,” Chumley said of the Conway match. “Al’s (Reynolds) hitting the ball well. We need to be a little bit stronger with our serves. We’re not missing a lot, but we’re not being real aggressive. We need to be a little more aggressive on our serves.
“Xandra (Lock), Kendall (Meadors) and Stacy (Cooper), they’re passing the ball well. They’ve pretty much taken the majority of the court on themselves. They’re doing a good job of covering that court.”
The Lady Panthers (2-1) will take on another talented opponent on Tuesday when they travel to Mena.
“They’re really good,” Chumley said of Mena. “They haven’t lost much and gained a lot. They’re similar to Conway.”
