Lady Panthers rout in 2nd round

December 3, 2012

SEARCY – After an ugly 37-28 opening-round win over Batesville in the Searcy Bank Classic, the Benton Lady Panthers cleaned their play up to destroy the Wynne Lady Jackets 54-26 in the second round on Friday night. Benton committed 22 turnovers against Batesville, but came out with more energy on Friday night.
"We played with a lot more enthusiasm and a lot more urgency," Benton Coach Jerry Chumley said. "We jumped on them. By far our best quarter of scoring. We were ready to play."
The Lady Panthers (4-0) outscored Wynne 25-8 in the first quarter with the help of three Braxton Chumley 3-pointers and three steals from Braylee Landreth. Benton hit four threes total in the quarter with Carmen King sinking the other.
The Lady Panthers led 43-11 at the half and the clock ran continuously in the second half at the request of the Wynne coach.
"Just a good all-around game," Coach Chumley said. "It's kind of what you envision; everyone playing with some energy, and defensively we took them totally out of their offense."
King led the Lady Panthers for the second consecutive game with 14 points after scoring eight the previous game. Chumley scored 12 points on 4 for 4 from the 3-point line and Landreth had 11 points.
Benton hit seven threes for the game and faced Searcy in the tournament championship on Saturday. Results will be in Monday's sports.

Parker and Brooks each had five, and Doggett hit a three, Reynolds and heffing ton had two.
