Saline County Circuit Clerk Dennis Milligan is expected to file paperwork today with the Arkansas Secretary of State's office to form an exploratory committee for the 2014 race for state treasurer, according to Jim Harris, chief of staff for the Circuit Clerk's office.
An exploratory committee allows a potential candidate to raise money that can be used in a race and to determine if there is enough support to officially enter the race.
Former Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Arkansas Highway Commission Chairman R. Madison Murphy of El Dorado are the co-chairmen of Milligan’s committee.
The current treasurer is Martha Shoffner. She is term-limited and cannot seek another term in that office.
Also serving on the committee are Charles Mazander and Princella Smith.
Mazander, a Benton resident, is owner of Mazander Engineering in Bryant, and a former member of the Arkansas Banking Commission.
Smith, an unsuccessful 2010 Republican candidate for Congress in the First Congressional District, is a former deputy clerk for Milligan in the Saline County Clerk’s office.
Smith gave a primetime speech in the 2004 Republican National Convention and worked for Arkansas Lt. Gov. Win Rockefeller, the 2006 Senate campaign of then-Maryland lieutenant governor Michael Steele, the 2008 Huckabee for President campaign. She was director of education for Arkansas Secretary of State Mark Martin. She is currently studying homeland security in Israel, and is a principal in American Pride Strategies.
Milligan has been a frequent guest on the Dave Elswick show radio show and has co-hosted it on several occasions. He will discuss the exploratory committee and the possibility of running for state treasurer during Tuesday's show.
In addition to being circuit clerk, Milligan is small businessmen and a former treasurer and chairman of the Republican Party of Arkansas.
