January 7, 2013

BAUXITE- The Bauxite Miners used the 3-pointer and a second half run in a 57-42 victory over the Malvern Leopards on Friday night at Fred Dawson Gymnasium.
The Bauxite Miners were led by sophomore forward Ben Madison who recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
“We stay on him to do all the little things right. Tonight I think he did lots of good things,” Bauxite Coach Mark Smith said of Madison. “He was on the boards for us big time. Ben played a really good game.”
Bauxite and Malvern battled back and forth in the first half as Malvern jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on a jumper by senior guard Khalid Dawn. Bauxite would answer right back on a jumper by Madison to tie it up with 6:09 remaining in the first quarter. Both teams would trade baskets until Malvern used a 10-0 run to end the first quarter capped by a long 3-pointer at the buzzer by Dawn to lead 16-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Bauxite would answer right back to start the second quarter on a 3-pointer by junior guard Hunter Holder to make the score 16-13. After a tightly contested second quarter, Bauxite would break the tie with 15 seconds left on a layup by Madison to lead at halftime 30-28. It’s a lead they would never relinquish.
“We kind of just took what they were giving us and it happened to be threes, and luckily we were hitting them, Smith said. “I think we did a better job executing where we were supposed to be [in the second half].
Bauxite came out on fire in the third quarter in capping off a 16-4 run with help from five 3-pointers including an 11-0 run to end the quarter with Bauxite leading 46-32. Madison, Holder, and senior forward Tyler Hill provided the 16-point outburst to blow the game wide open as Malvern couldn’t match the scoring.
Malvern would finally end the run on a layup by senior forward Travon Polk with 7:01 remaining in the game, but the damage was already done. The Leopards would manage just 10 points in the final quarter as the Miners were able to cruise to the 15-point victory.
Along with Madison, Bauxite was led by Hill who added 19 points and three rebounds. Senior guard Chris Revas added eight points while Holder chipped in with seven points. Senior forward Logan Williams added two points and four rebounds.. Malvern was led by Polk with 14 points and sophomore guard K.J. Felders who added nine points.
