Miners swat Yellowjackets in final
CLINTON – The Bauxite Miners defeated host Clinton Yellowjackets 60-46 to win the First Service Bank Classic in Clinton on Monday night.
After a high-scoring first quarter in which the Miners (7-4) led 18-16, Bauxite would go on to lead 34-27 at the half before gaining closing it out on the Yellowjackets.
“This is actually our first full game where we grinded out the whole game and we just kept battling,” Bauxite Coach Andy Brakebill said. “We just pushed it on out and finished the game.”
Though the Miners had little trouble scoring, led by Ben Madison’s 29 points, stopping the opposition on the offensive glass has been a problem.
“One thing we’re definitely getting hurt on is teams are getting too many second chances off of offensive rebounds,” Brakebill said. “When we clean that up and limit teams to one shot, we’ll be fine.”
But it wasn’t only Madison contributing to the win.
“Ben did his thing,” Brakebill said, “but Ian Allred played the best game he has all year. He hit some big shots. Bradly McCool hit free throws down the stretch to put the game away.
Following Madison’s 29 points, Allred had 14, McCool 10, and Dylan Melton added five.
The Miners will pick up conference play next Tuesday when they host the Robinson Senators in 7-4A action.
