July 3, 2014

Anyone looking for barbecue in the upcoming Fourth of July weekend should be mindful that the Que'n in the Park State BBQ Championships will be held July 4 and 5 in Benton.

The winner will receive an American Royal Qualifier and a Jack Daniels Invitational Qualifier place.

The event will take place at the Saline County Fairgrounds. It is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, which is the largest sanctioning body in the world.

Organizers of the event say, "You'll have some of the best pros in one spot this weekend."

A total of $6,200 in cash prizes will be given out at the event with categories open for chicken, ribs, pork and brisket. The event also will feature a smokie eating contest. The chicken will be judged at noon, pork ribs at 12:30 p.m., pork at 1 p.m. and beef brisket at 1:30 p.m.

This will be the fourth year for the event and organizer Lee Crow said he expects this to be the best year yet.
